Carry Handgun of the Year - 2019

I was listening to a syndicated radio broadcast last night. They had the marketing rep from STI on talking about their Staccato - C which has been named ICA Carry Handgun of the Year. ICA is the "Industry Choice Awards". The STI Staccato C is a single stack, 9mm, 1911 with a 3.9 inch barrel for the shockingly low price of $1,499.

I found it interesting that in today's environment a fairly large 1911 pattern pistol won the Carry Handgun of the Year award. The trend seems to be toward smaller and lighter striker fired pistols. I'm not saying the current trend is sensible and I'm not saying the STI isn't a capable carry gun, I just found that combination of features winning that award interesting. That's just my opinion, yours may be different.

For anyone interested in visiting STI's site, here is a link to the Staccato-C. https://stiguns.com/product-lineup/staccato-c/

The price is very reasonable for what is shown in the pics. If this carried name Nighthawk it would cost > $3000. Some people pay $700 for something mass assembled of plastic and sheet metal parts. LGS had second-hand Wilson Combat Glock that did not last long. The price was $1200.

Interesting looking gun, that STI.

I very often have hungry pockets, but even I don't think $1500.00 for a quality defensive carry gun is outrageous at all. Sure, there are cheaper options, but there are many models made for carry that are a more lot expensive than that.

I often carry an STI VIP, basically the double stack version of that one. Got it used for $1350 with 9 Dawson mags. Got a pretty big moccasin trying to eat a catfish with it one year after dragging ponds.

Sounds like a lot of money and at one point in my life that was more than I paid for my daily driver, these days that’s not even a full set of tires.

Yes, it’s my smoothest carry gun. I will admit to not using it as much as others I care less about being damaged.

I guess I get that from my Father when I was a kid, telling me to not mess up his gloves because my skin would grow back...so I have “beater” carry guns that see more abuse than others.

Not trying to be a sour puss or anything but I literally can buy a sig p365 ($499.99), walther pps ($279.99) m&p shield ($299.99), and Glock 43 ($449.99) for roughly the same price of this one STI ($1529.96 vs 1495.99). I’m willing to bet all the guns I listed sells at least 10:1 to the STI and probably more. With that said I think it’s an awesome gun and probably one hell of a shooter, just not for 99% of people looking for a carry gun. I’d be interested to know how many of these have been sold.

So you would rather spend the same amount on 4 guns that reside in the same niche and are roughly the same thing.

Personally I prefer quality over quantity..

Not exactly. There’s no doubt the STI is a higher quality gun, Stevie Wonder can see that. However this STI is indeed in the same niche as those other guns, the ccw niche. So in this case I’d rather have 4 ccw guns than 1 ccw gun, especially since the other guns mentioned aren’t exactly chopped liver last I knew. They will put holes in bad guys just as good as the STI and carry easier as well with probably less maintenance. The STI is for the 1911 crowd that want a higher end carry gun and I respect that, but at the end of the day it’s a $1500 quality carry 1911, nothing more nothing less. Like I said it’s a cool gun and I like the looks of it, but it’s not for 99% of those who carry guns. Ask guys at ranges and gun stores what they carry and I bet you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in the physical world carrying one of these. Before I carry one of these I’d just rather carry my cz p01 which looks roughly the same size if not smaller with almost double the capacity. Different strokes for different folks, heck I’m the same guy who would rather 3 $100 baitcasters than 1 $300 reel, because I’ve had great success with the $100 baitcasters and catch just as many fish or more with them as the guys with the $300 reels. Apples to oranges but same concept.

Umm sure, but since it's the right to keep and bear arms plural, I can have a Sig, Walther, S&W, an XDm (I don't like Glocks) AND still have a STI.
Nobody said it has to be an EDC it can be the BBQ carry gun.

For a BBQ gun, go for it!

Consider however that if you have to use it for it’s intended purpose, even if exonerated, you’ll likely never see it again.

I know that with two justified shootings that I investigated, the firearms still reside at the Georgia GBI evidence archives. Also, several hunting accidents. And, a Remington M700 Rifle that was involved in an AD that wasn’t classified as a hunting accident. Litigated!!! Remington lost...
I’ve got some (several) $$$$ shooters/match guns but for serious cc, I’ve got a couple of S&W Shields and a BodyGuard; depends on weather, dress, and location, function as to what I carry. Oops, forgot the Keltec K32, also.

They do have a Staccato P that packs 15+1 or 21+1. Course it costs 500 more so you might as well add another small striker fired poly to your running list. :)

If you are involved in a shooting the cost of the pistol used will be the least of your worries. To take your analogy further you should only drive cheap cars because if you get pulled over for DUI they are going to tow it.

Or I can add another one of these: CZ PCR, P07,HK P2000, or Sig SP2022 “compact hammer” fired guns to my running list . I’ve seen all for around $500 or less here and there. Hey to be honest I was really thinking about getting a Wilson combat EDC X9 that holds 15 or 18+1 for double the price of the staccato p, partly because of the uniqueness of the no grip safety design and I think it looks cool. Plus a buddy of mine let me shoot his and it’s a tack driver. However he carries a Cz compact SDP built on a pcr and boy is it a shooter as well. At the end of the day it’s all personal choice and I choose not to carry a $1500 8 round 9mm for my edc and those who want to more power to them. By the way I have non of those small striker fired pistols I mentioned, I carry compact size guns not subcompact but was just making a point since they all have the roughly the same capacity as the “carry handgun of the year”
