Is there something going on with the manufacturer of CCI primers (Speer?)

Last week there was not one CCI primer at a huge Cabela's.

Now Midway is selling them at a fair price calling them "clearance correction."

To me that means that the retailers cannot get any more of them and/or the manufacturer is reconfiguring the product to "new and improved."

Cabela's online store (which will drop-ship to your local place) shows every flavor in stock: https://www.cabelas.com/product/CCI-Primers-Per/731748.uts

Powder Valley shows almost all in stock... and with current stocks of 1,000-primer cases in the hundreds for most types. https://www.powdervalleyinc.com/pro...primers/?query_type_brand=or&filter_brand=cci

Midway is selling some types under a price designated "clearance." What Midway chooses to use as its marketing language probably doesn't indicate very much.

Probably just Midway getting stock down.

It would be a big deal if CCI all of a sudden changed their primers. I would be surprised if that was the case.

For some unknown reason Midway does that. They claim a closeout on items we all know will be available in the future. It's possible they are closing out that lot or delivery order because a new delivery is pending but that's just a guess.

I highly doubt any CCI primers will be out of production, they are just too popular IMO.

Also, I'd note that Midway (a fine company from whom I have bought, and will continue to buy, many items) has, for example, the CCI SPP's on "clearance" for $32.49. Meanwhile, Powder Valley has them for $28.00. Midsouth is at $29.50. Graf is at $31.99. It's not like Midway is blowing these things out for some absurd price... they're still well above the serious online reloader-oriented suppliers.

Seriously, let's not start any stupid rumors here.

For some unknown reason Midway does that.

But they're not even doing that. They've got them marked "clearance." They just have a "sale" on... a "sale" at prices less than MSRP (I guess?), but still higher than a lot of their online competition. This is NOTHING.

ATLDave No rumors involved.. just questions.

I said - "Now Midway is selling them at a fair price calling them "closeouts."

BTW I bought a bunch of them and I love Midway.

I agree Dave, Midway has always had higher prices on powder and primers than most of their competitors. I can't remember ever buying either from Midway although I do but many other products from them.

When I do but powder or primers online I usually go to Powder Valley of Midsouth unless another vendor is running a sale plus no/low hazmat.

The only time I have ever bought primers from Midway is on sale, like when they had the CCI 500 in strips at $20 per 1K. Bought 10K.

I like Midway, have been a customer for decades, but they are not competitive on primers.

Which was not quite right. They are calling them "clearance," not "closeouts."

More importantly, their "fair price" is still above the reloading specialists' regular current price. That's not a criticism of Midway, but they are not blowing these things out in any way that would even raise a question about whether there is "something going on."

As for rumors - yes, posting something saying "To me that means that the retailers cannot get any more of them and/or the manufacturer is reconfiguring the product to "new and improved,"" is a good way to start a rumor. Which, in this case, is completely unsupported by even inferential reasoning.

I'm not trying to fuss at you, just trying to prevent rumors from starting by demonstrating how far we are from the kind of circumstance in which guessing at a potential problem would be warranted.

Midway also called Winchester primers a clearance item a few weeks ago. I bought a case at Midway when they lowered their hazmat fee to $10 and had free shipping.

I was at Sportsman's Warehouse last week and they had a lot of CCI primers. Didn't need any, but I think they were 3.44 per hundred. About normal for brick and mortar stores around here.

And in my opinion, that's the issue. Folks know that Midway is not the cheapest, therefore, they buy from other vendors. As a result, Midway finds itself sitting on too much slow moving inventory and runs a "clearance" sale to get it out of the warehouse.

I always thought that Midway drop shipped their powder and primers from their vendors and had nothing “in stock”.
I know they drop ship powders from Powder Valley but I think they stock primers. (not sure though) This is why you pay 2x hazmat fees when ordering both at the same time.

I considered myself quite fortunate to grab a case of CCI 500 (Stock #00014) at the local Gun Show for $140 out the door, $28/1000. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I found them. Two booths over the vendor was selling a case of Winchester WSP for $160, plus tax. I would’ve sprung for it, but it was too early...and I didn’t relish walking around all day with that weight in my backpack.

Clearly, to me, the only option with primers is to buy bulk when you find a great/good deal, and stock up when necessary. Since my reloading journey began in January, primers have been the hardest items to find in stock, or at a good price. One can always find a powder....maybe not your favorite, but something workable. That hasn’t been my experience with primers.

It really isn't worth the effort. Good online sellers are reducing the hazmat charges and you can get what you really want reliably. Definitely stock up - I buy about 6 months of powder and primers at a time. I generally purchase from Graf's who has ~$10 hazmat and 7.95 flat-rate shipping all the time. So two hazmat orders per year only adds up to $28/year. Amortized over the ~12,000 rounds I'll load in a year, it's nothing. And it's easy to spend a lot more on gunshow fees, gas and sales tax just to set you up for the kind of needle-in-a-haystack endeavor you've described.

While I don’t disagree with your comment, your real issue was with my local gun show reference. While this certainly factors into over all cost...I’d likely end up going to the show even to buy nothing, as it’s the one place that my disabled vet son will leave the house to go to. In this particular case I wasn’t even planning to go...only to find that my son had put it on the calendar in February after our first gun show in over a decade...which was the only place he’d accompanied me to that wasn’t the VA Medical Center, or some other medical/pain management appointment. For this reason alone I celebrate the opportunity to pay the gas, the gun show fees (this show I had 4 entries comped to me), or the sad sales tax the may end up on a purchase, as it’s still a heck of a lot cheaper than meds and therapy.
Having said that...I love Graf’s...and keep looking for more things I can buy from them. Love flat rate shipping.

Cabela's won't "ship to store" on powder and primers. Go ahead, try it and get back to us.

I usually don't buy enough primers at a time to get free shipping. I usually get them at my LGS. They cost a little more at my LGS but not paying Hazmat shipping fees easily off sets any higher price difference. Plus it helps my LGS.
