I'm trying to get my Florida CCW as I have just recently moved to Lake Charles Louisiana. The local guy wants $90 for the firearms training to mee the FL requirements.

Is there anyone in the area that can provide this training at a reasonable rate? Or at least recommend someone? I already have my CCW from Utah and I just don't like paying twice for the same thing.

I don't know if they do but more than likely so. I haven't really had a chance to look around yet as I've only been here a month and trying to settle down. I just went to he first gun shop I saw.

I know an NRA class would meet the requirement, or a signed document from an NRA instructor. I'm tempted to call the guy that did my CCW training in Utah to see if he would write me a letter.

Unfortunately I haven't done any service. But what I am looking for are Instructors in Louisiana near Lake Charles. Or in Texas near Beaumont.

I just checked the NRA classes and they're out in New Orleans. That's a 3 hour drive and I don't know if I can do that. Plus, they were $100 for the Basic Pistol Class.

I would drive 20 hours straight if it could make me carry legally. I hate Missouri more than life iteself...*settles down*...sorry bought that...

What part of Utah did you live in? I grew up in Provo.

I miss Provo so much, its just so damn expensive to live there now. Missouri is so cheap but the CCW issue is killing me. Damn St Louis...

Stratford:

You don't mention where in Florida you are, but any gun show by Southern Classic or Suncoast Gunshows has classes at the show for reasonable rates. Get a copy of GunList and see when there is one in your area.
You can also call the NRA at (703) 267-1500. They can give you names of NRA instructors in your area that provide the training, you can call them and shop around. The NRA courses are good for the Florida CWL

My Two Cents...

From what I read here
http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/utah
it appears that Utah issues non-resident
licenses. I assume that you had a resident
license which probably expired when you
departed Utah to move to Louisiana.

My question is - why do you not get
a license there in Louisiana instead of
getting a non resident license from Florida?

Also, I would have to assume that the state
of Utah had some kind of requirement to show
firearm proficiency before they issued you a
license. If so, would not that training be worthy
and recognizable as suffient for either a non-res
in Fl or a resident license in La?

I do see where La recognizes Fl license on a
reciprocal basis. I also checked packing. org
and the state of Utah does require handgun
proficiency by a licensed firearms instructor and
then a certificate of proficiency is issued.

Are you letting us in on the whole story?

I don't want to get my Louisiana one because it costs a fortune. So far, the guy wants to charge $90 for the class. Then since I haven't lived in LA for the past 15 years or so, I have to pay extra. I have to pay $150 to get my license and that's good for only 4 years. LA doesn't have much reciprocity with other states.

THis is why I'm going with FL. FL only charges $117 and if I can find a decent priced Instructor, it'll be well worth it. Plus, FL is recognized by many states.

Yes, I still have my UT CCW but it is not recognized in LA. IF I have to get another permit, it might as well be from a place that will be recognized in many places.

To get a UT CCW, there is a firearms safety class you have to take. When you complete the class, the instructor fills out the form, basically signing it and putting his instructor number, and you submit it to the state. You don't get a certificate or anything, though I'm tempted to call them and get one.

That's pretty much the background.

Also, I do not live in Florida. I just want to get a Florida Permit. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.:(

Stratford:

be careful as to the law for residents (of LA)
holding out state permits.

here in Michigan if you are a resident,
you must hold a Michigan permit, period.

Tho I hold Florida and New Hampshire,
and Michigan recognises those states permits,
as a Michigan resident, those permits do NOT suffice for CCW for me.

Further, even if you are merely "staying"
in LA and still a "resident" of Utah legally,
that will not apply after a relatively fixed
short period of time (usually 30-90 days).
this is similar to the drivers license requirements
if you are staying, say for university studies,
in one state while holding legal residence
at the parents for voting, etc.

If your concern is to use Florida for reciprocity
for other states, no problemo.
They accepted my CCW class info from here in Michigan without question.
I think if you have had ANY class Florida will accept it.

I use mine for CCW in Texas.
Texas does not recognise Michigan,
but Texas does recognise Florida,
even for non residents of Florida.

Doc,

I never thought about it that way. I'll have to look into that and start asking more questions. I was doing a matrix and if I got my FL in combination with my UT, the LA permit wouldn't really offer me any more reciprocity other than having an LA permit.

I'm really not planning ot stay here more than a year or so, and I'd hate to spend the extra $150 to get the LA permit. Once again, the main culprit is the money. IF I had billions, I wouldn't care about $150. Then again, I'd have my MP5 by now too. :D

Hunter Saftey Course

Is a hunter safety course less expesive where you are?

These qualify under FL law:

790.06 (2)(h)

2. Completion of any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;

3. Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or the Department of State;

4. Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;

5. Presents evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service;

6. Is licensed or has been licensed to carry a firearm in this state or a county or municipality of this state, unless such license has been revoked for cause; or

7. Completion of any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association certified firearms instructor;

A photocopy of a certificate of completion of any of the courses or classes; or an affidavit from the instructor, school, club, organization, or group that conducted or taught said course or class attesting to the completion of the course or class by the applicant; or a copy of any document which shows completion of the course or class or evidences participation in firearms competition shall constitute evidence of qualification under this paragraph; any person who conducts a course pursuant to subparagraph 2., subparagraph 3., or subparagraph 7., or who, as an instructor, attests to the completion of such courses, must maintain records certifying that he or she observed the student safely handle and discharge the firearm;

Stratford:

Do you have any sort of certificate issued by a state institution? I sent a copy of my Minnesota DNR (Dep't of Natural Resources) firearms safety certificate. It was issued in ~1966, when I was a wee lad. It was, however, sufficient for Florida. I had a duplicate certificate, since mine was lost along the way, so I had a local instructor sign it. All went well, and I received my Florida permit, even though it took nearly 4 months (misplaced fingerprint card).

Sometimes, you can take the safety class for a small fee - $10-25 - but you end up sitting in class with a bunch of 12-year-olds.

All I have for documentation is my UT CCW card. I may have to make a couple of phone calls. One, over to FL to see if they'll accept my UT CCW as documentation. The other to the instructor taht taught my class.

As for the hunter safety course, I don't know how much it is.

Utah CCW

Unfortunately, the CWP itself will not qualify as training documentation for a FL license.

Strat, dont give up. I got my Florida CCW permit and it covers alot of states. Pretty much filled the gap that my Arizona permit didnt cover.

Only place I stopped so far that is gun unfriendly is Ohio and neither covered them.

We all know the story behind Ohio. But the future is looking bright so long as my kids arnt with me :banghead:

Anyway, keep checking all the angles. Florida CCW permit is a definite gotta have!!
