Armed Victim Fights Back
11:52 AM EST,February 12, 2003
Associated Press

MANCHESTER, Conn. -- Three people were arrested today after a man foiled an armed robbery attempt by fighting back, police said.
The victim, Richard Jarvis, 42, of Manchester, was confronted in the parking lot of Millbridge Hollow condominiums at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday by a 14-year-old and two accomplices, Pastor Guzman, 18, and Juan Gomes, 16, said police Lt. Jim Neiswanger.

Guzman, armed with a sawed-off .22-caliber rifle, and the 14-year-old got out of a car and demanded money from Jarvis, Neiswanger said.

When Guzman raised the rifle to Jarvis' head, Jarvis grabbed for the weapon, police said. Guzman tried to fire the rifle several times but it failed to discharge, Neiswanger said.

As Guzman backed up with the rifle to try to get it to fire, Jarvis pulled out a Colt .38-caliber pistol from his pocket, firing about three rounds. One bullet grazed the 14-year-old in the right shoulder, Neiswanger said.

Police arrived at the scene and took Guzman and the juvenile into custody after a brief foot chase. Gomes fled in a stolen car, Neiswanger said.

The 14-year-old boy was treated at a local hospital for an abrasion, Neiswanger said.

Guzman was being held in lieu of $500,000 bond this morning and faces charges including assault, larceny and attempted robber.

New Britain police found the stolen car about an hour later in Gomes' neighborhood and used a tracking dog to find Gomes, who was arrested, Neiswanger said.

The 14-year-old, whose name was not released due to his age, was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and larceny.

Gomes was being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond and charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary, larceny, and risk of injury to a minor.

Notice no discussion of load, barrel length, nightsites, stippled frontstraps, etc. Just a reasonable ending to what could have been murder.
