I am just wondering what the differance reallly is in the Centerfire and Rimfire scopes.

I have a 3-9 X 32 A/O Simmons .22 MAG scope that is brand new. Its is the same scope that my kids use on our .22 Savage Mark II

I was wondering if I can use that scope for now on our new Stevens 200 .243 Cal bolt action rifle until we figure out if deer hunting is really in my kids future or not.

If deer hunting is something they want to keep doing then I will find a better scope for them to use on it. If not then I will find a REALLY NICE scope to use on it for me when I dont want to shoot my .270 Weatherby

In general, the parallax is set at 60 yards or so on a .22 scope.
More like 150 yards with a high-power scope.

Less expensive .22 scopes may not play well with the recoil on hard kicking guns.

Yours might be O.K. on a .243, but I just don't know.

Yeah, the main difference is the parallax-free setting. Ordinarily, "rimfire" scopes are set to by parallax-free at 50 or 60 yards, "shotgun or muzzleloader" scopes at 75 yards, and "rifle" scopes at either 100 or 150 yards. I think some may be 200 though. The other difference is durability - a big boomer may break some rimfire scopes. So if the scope has a lifetime warranty (Leupold, Nikon, etc.) and you want to try a rimfire scope on a centerfire, go for it. They'll repair it if it breaks.
