Giannetti 'showed his true colors'

I was amused to read that I was Sen. John A. Giannetti's "best friend" in 2000 ("Senator of controversy," March 31). I moved to Maryland in January 2000 and did not become acquainted with Mr. Giannetti until 2003, when I became executive director of CeaseFire Maryland.

As for his sponsoring a bill to increase penalties for using assault weapons in a crime, surely he is confusing this with Sen. Robert J. Garagiola's [(D-Dist. 15) of Germantown] bill, SB 116, in the current General Assembly? To date, he has not lent his support to this mild bill but rather is working with the NRA to kill it.

Finally, Giannetti fans like [gun rights advocate] Augustus Alzona, who approved of the good senator's opposition to the assault weapons ban in 2004, speak volumes about the senator. Mr. Alzona is the same man who in 2002 circulated a picture to the House Judiciary Committee of Nazi officers with the superimposed heads of Senators Brian E. Frosh (D-Dist. 16) of Chevy Chase and Christopher Van Hollen (D-Dist. 18) of Kensington and Del. Mark K. Shriver (D-Dist. 15) of Bethesda because they were sponsoring a bill requiring licensing and registration of handguns in Maryland. Mr. Alzona was skewered for this piece of trash.

CeaseFire Maryland has worked since 1986 to reduce gun violence in our state by supporting sensible gun laws that will save lives. Giannetti, by explicitly allying himself with the NRA and opposing the assault weapons ban backed by 77 percent of Marylanders, showed his true colors. It will be up to the voters in District 21 to decide if he deserves to return to Annapolis in 2006.

Mr Tuttle, the only sensible gun laws that I have ever heard of is to put the criminal in jail.................sensible gun laws my #%&@. :banghead:

I think CF-MD and Leah's relevance are being eroded every day.

Even the major papers pass right by her to get quotes from that Horowitz buffoon over at the Brady Bunch.
