My normal carry gun is a Kahr P9. It’s a subcompact 7+1 polymer framed auto. I’ve had the gun for 17+ years and have a good bit invested in the ‘system’ in terms of spare mags, parts, holsters, etc. I even have a spare gun I picked up just in case I break the original. I have small hands and the Kahr just feels really good and I shoot it well. It’s also very easy to conceal.

I went to a gun show today and made the mistake of picking up a Sig P365xl. My heart skipped a beat. It feels like it was molded just for my hand, and it holds 12 rounds as opposed to the seven in my Kahr. My lizard brain was screaming at me to buy it. $549 plus 6% tax. So figure by the time I get spare mags, new holsters and shoot enough carry ammo to trust it I’m looking a cool Grand to switch platforms.

I left it there. I figure after almost two decades I should probably just dance with the gal I brought. I’m not at all convinced that an extra five rounds is worth spending that kind of cash given the likelihood that I will ever need even one round for real.

But the lizard brain still wants one...

If the 365 is a valid improvement over your current gun it's not wrong to look into buying one. Do yôur research, start saving and by the time you have the money saved you should know for sure if you want one.

I view firearm purchases as a system. I figure in the availability and cost of extra magazines, carry gear (holster(s) for handgun, etc), ammunition and sights. As a reloader I defray a lot of cost of ammunition by loading my own. Reloading allows me to shoot my favorite cartridge; the 32-20.

I also practice “3 is 2, 2 is 1 and 1 is None” for many of my guns. I am interested in the new Ruger Wrangler if Ruger gets them out to the market before prices spike again. So I am planning on buying two of them. (I really my doubts about Ruger commitment to manufacture it).

One other big change I have made is I rarely sell or trade a gun. Political reality is our gun rights are very fragile so I plan (and foolishly hope maybe) to have guns that will still be legal.

I would not part with my pair of Kahr’s. You are heavily invested in them. Put them away for a rainy day or next crisis. If anything I would consider buying more magazines as that is a disposable part.

Oh and add a pair of SIG’s.

My reaction at first exposure to the 365xl was the same as yours. I am waiting somewhat impatiently for a) plenty of field testing and reviews by others to confirm durability and utility, b) a model with a manual safety because I would rather be safe than sorry, and c) a tac package so I will have all essentials immediately at a better price. Also, as the initial demand is met, prices may moderate. Or not, who knows? By the time I get there, however, the gun will have been thoroughly wrung out, weaknesses revealed, and possibly improvements made. No more bleeding edge for me.

That's one of the reasons I decided to walk away. I've seen the regular 365 on sale at Cabela's for $399 over Christmas but the XL model is newer and is still over $500 everywhere I look. Once the people that just have to have them first are satisfied I'm hoping the prices of the two models equalize.

I have carried a Colt Defender 45 or a Kahr 9 mm for the last several years and was perfectly happy. Kept reading all of the stuff about the Sig P365. I had never even seen a Sig in my life.
Wandered into a LGS and they had a P365 with a safety.
I wouldn’t have even picked it up if it hadn’t had the safety. Well I wandered out the door with it.
Use the flat base mag for very occasional pocket carry. The rest of the time it’s on my belt with the optional 12 mag.
I’m a happy camper.
I “think” this will be my last gun purchase.
I know, famous last words, I am more interested in thinning the herd and the Sig fits my last gun need to a “T”.

That's why I apply my pet-shop rule to things like cars, motorcycles, guns and yes.... dogs.

If I don't need it.
If I don't already want it.

If it does not already have a place set aside for it.... I DON'T EVEN LOOK.

No room for a dog? Won't even turn my head towards a dog-gettin'-place.

Todd.

I think of the number of latest greatest guns that I have had to have... Most if the time my interest fades with time.

The PMR 30 comes to mind... I still like to concept and the gun but I have never gotten over the price of ammo. The Ruger MK4 was similar... now I think I would prefer a CP33. A high capacity target 9mm pistol still brings a urning... and some day the right 1911/2011 deal will come along or maybe it will be the new Dan Wesson DWX.

I do my best to stay away from making impulse buys. I try to research my acquisitions before purchasing. This usually helps keep me from buying "safe queens"

I haven’t bought a new gun in quite some time... but the p365xl intrigues me. I want to try putting the standard grip module on an xl for a long slide/ short grip combo . Seems ideal. Especially since today I appendix carried an m&p pro 5”. All day.

I know that Lizard Brain. Mine speaks to me often. It reared its head when I heard about the Rock River Poly 1911, the Glock 48, the Sig P365, and the Ruger American Rimfire. Right or wrong, though, I also have a well-developed Overthinker that can club it into submission when necessary. Perhaps more importantly, my aversion to selling tested, reliable guns is stronger than my Lizard Brain.

OP, I don't blame you for being drawn to the P365XL. I don't care for the way the P365 fits my hand, but that's me. I'm having a similar struggle with the 4" S&W Shield .45. That said, you've had the Kahr for 17 years. You know it. It works for you. Get the P365XL when the price is right, but don't give up the Kahr to do it.

Yeah, resist the Lizard Brain. Walk away, you did the right thing, you can (almost) always go back, and buy it
later. If I bought every screaming lizard brain purchase I came across, I'd be able to single-handedly arm Canada.
Later, after you've slept on it, if your far saner human brain sez "go for it", then by all means, get it.

OTOH, there was that SS CZ52 I walked away from, a while back, when I returned, it was gone, aargh!

I usually try to get it before it's popular or wait till it hits market saturation, no one cares any more and the next new thing is out.
Back in the day I wanted a gemtech SFN, but they were going for like a $1,000. Now they can't give them away for $400. Sure am glad I waited. Being late to the game pays for another decent one plus the tax stamp for it.

Give it a year. If you feel the same way then maybe rent one and think it over again.

Its very easy to fall into the trap of consumerism. I see tons of guys that spent more time and $ buying decoys at Cabelas than they did scouting and buying gas...

That $1000 invested into a couple cases of ammo and a class will yield better results.
