if it was a semi auto and not a bolt id go FAL before siaga or cetme.
Please show me a quality FAL in the OP's price range (less than 500 bucks) please I would jump on that.

I'm surprised nobody has answered with the absolute cheapest way to go for 308 power.

Join the Mosin-Nagant club. Ammo is not as cheap this year as it was last year, but it's still in the 50-80 bucks for 440 rounds.

You can go with the M44 which is more carbine length.. or the 91/30 variety, which once corked, and pre-supposing you find one with good rifle grooves, will easily shoot 1 moa. Mine was picked up for 100 bucks and had been drilled for an ATI mount. I slapped on a Wally-Mart scope and instantly became a "Vasily Zeitsev" sniper. All of this would come in under your budget, and you have in your hands one of the most historically recognizable rifles.

Just be verrry careful. I don't know anyone that has purchased just one! They are infectous.

I bought one.
I sold it a month later, one week to the day after shooting it for the first time.

Sniper gun, my ear. It was all over the paper at 50 yards. Yes, I scrubbed it and checked everything to be sure it was tight before shooting.

Granted, it was a surplus gun and cheap (gun with spam can was $200), but I won't go down that road again unless it's literally 1/2 that price and it's all I can find.

I guess put me down as "the exception to the rule."

Except, of course, that the Mosin isn't 7.62 NATO nor .308 Win., which is what the OP was asking for.

I'm looking at ishapore enfields, spanish FR 8's, and german mausers. However, my question is, are there any milsurps chambered for .308 winchester,

Do on search on "7.62 .308 compatible" and you will find nearly unlimited arguments back and forth. I am of the impression that it is do-able, but whether one should is a matter of personal risk aversion. Since milsurp ammo is cheaper than commercial that is the route I take.

Otherwise, AFAIK, if you want a bolt 7.62 NATO you can chose from the Enfield action or the Mauser action. The Remington 700's from 10 years ago, or older, have a fine reputation and should run about four bills.

Gunbroker, Auction Arms, and Guns America are all good places to find the special rifle that needs a good home.

do not i repeat do not buy the stevens model even tho its made by savage the savage model guns are better built and shoot better with more durability i work for gander mtn and we have a savage 308 model 111 package with a scope and the scopes not real great but the whole combo is 399.99
