Does anyone own one of these? How do they stack up against the venerable AK47?

Used by PLA troops widely in the 80s against Vietnamese troops. Ive seen photos of them years back when Sri Lankan troops finished off the Tiger s of Elam, LTTE. Bangladeshi and Burmese troops also carry these assault rifles. They are believed to be more accurate than the regular AK 47 s. We dont know why the PLA switch to these when they have been making real nice AK 47s wtih folding bayonets even exporting them all over the world.

Chinese doctrine as far as infantry actions is more in-line with western versus Soviet tactics where they place a greater emphasis on accuracy over volume.

While the PLA did use AK's for a time, they did phase them out in favor of the Type-81 as it was able to deliver higher accuracy then the AKM Platform. I recall reading somewhere that the PLA General Staff was actually rather dissatisfied with the AKMs overall accuracy. In addition, there is also the national pride aspect of using a natively-designed weapon, instead of simply rolling out copies of a foreign-made weapon.

Norinco continues to make the AKM as a mainly/strictly export-only product.

Thats right, the CHicoms prefer more accuracy in their weapons. Many of the Russian AKs were studied and improved during the 60s. As we all know they have the thcker receiver and barrel. In fact my Type 56 imported by GSAD of California in the 80s a preban is very accurate. It was 1.5 inch MOA at 100 yds with Ulyanovsk surplus on sandbag rest.

Unlikely. Literally a handful of semi-auto variants were brought into the US before the 1989 ban. It's quite possible that there are more of these rifles up in your neck of the woods.

Yah, that's pretty much what I thought.

I haven't seen any, or know of any up here, but there is an importer that's looking at bringing them in. I'm sure the quality will be on par with the Chinese Type 56 (or at least I hope), and was just wondering what someone who has used them side by side with an AK thinks.

That is so sweet, i think it looks cool than an AK. The bolt could be like the SKS, non rotating which is more practical. The barrel is definitely more thicker making for a more robust set up. More accurate is the end result.

I'm not following you: Rotating bolts generally have much better primary extraction than tipping bolts. Also, since the typical rotating bolt locks at the front, the barrel extension/receiver can be lighter since it has a shorter length that has to handle the stress of firing.
