I had an interesting conversation today with a very experienced gunsmith about shotguns. This gentleman claims that all shotgun slugs today are designed to be fired in shotguns with up to a full choke. He was asserting that shooting a slug through a choked shotgun presents no danger or chance of damage to the gun what-so-ever. This is news to me. I was always under the impression that you are to never fire slugs through anything tighter than maybe an 'improved cylinder' barrel. I was wondering what y'all had to say about this ...

Pretty much right on the mark, just make sure if equipped with choke tubes that they are tight, or you might blow them and the threads out the end of the barrel.

Before I got the 18-1/2" cylinder bored barrel for my Maverick 88/Mossy, I shot slugs through the 28" modified choke tube. But I dont really recommend it, recoil is significatly heavier than with the short barrel.

Your Mileage Will Vary

No "problems" with shooting any modern slug through every choke, BUT, you will see a patterning difference between chokes & more specifically what slug you shoot, & from what shotty.

I've a shotty, or so, dedicated to shooting just slugs - all smoothbore, BTW.

The remainder, I've thunk that it'd be a decent enough idea to be able to slap a slug-load in for a bit of a "stand-off-thing. For these shottys, I use the (most usually) modified choke - my fave - & pattern those slugs that work best in this particular firearm, with that specific choke.

Sometimes it matters.

For an all-round SG, I'd pattern a decent load for what you mainly want it to do - far as bird-hunting/buck-shot or home-defence, etc. - & then pattern several various slugs to see how they react to what you already do most of.

Slugs hitting at point of aim for your primary uses is only icing on the cake.

I wouldn't worry one bit about shooting any modern slug through any choke - just might not pattern like you'd want.
