Citizens against violence...

Ok, so I'm sick of seeing all these various sites that are really just another Brady site in disguise. (Gun Guys, 50caliberterror, freedomstatesalliance, etc...) I was also thinking about how the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence site produces a score card that isn't scored by a state having less violent crime but rather by it's gun control measures and how a higher score (more gun control) usually means a higher violent crime rate.

Then the idea came... "citizens against violence" or some other catchy "we're against violence" phrase. It could be used to promoted things like CCW to protect against violent criminals. It could also be used to push our version of "reasonable" gun control. When Brady et al. attacks groups like the NRA, people know that the NRA has a vested interest in guns but to attack a non-violence organization would be just plain wrong.

This works on several levels, I'm sure most people here on the high road already believe in responsible gun ownership and seek to reduce violent crimes. Those who do carry aren't interested in committing violent crimes but rather preventing them.

I'm posting this here because I just don't have the time or knowledge to setup an organization like this. I'd certainly be willing to help out in any way I can but with two kids (one 4 months the other 3 years) free time is rather hard to come by. So if anyone wants to take this on I think it could really help the right to keep and bear arms fight.

Montgomery County, Maryland has had an organization called "Montgomery Citizens for a Safer Maryland" (MCSM) for years. That organization was founded by gunnies for just the flying-under-the-radar purpose described by flynnguy in the mid 1990's. The reality of experience with that group is that the name advantage is marginal and is quickly compromised by organizational advocacy. In other words, a "rose by any other name would smell so sweet".

However, I'll add to this observation by noting that good ideas are a dime-a-dozen. RKBA activists don't lack for good ideas. What lacks in the RKBA movement are good people to execute the many ideas available.

If you lack "time or knowledge to setup an organization like this" then you aren't supplying the one need in short supply -- your time and effort. If you want expert guidance, I'll be happy to put you in touch with the one remaining founding member and current leader of MCSM. I'm sure he'd be willing to give you knowledge so that your time would be wisely spent in establishing an organization.

Well, I hear in Georgia(the state, not the country) or somewhere near there, there is an armed neighborhood watch. Even the media goes pro-gun occasionally.

I understand. But, reading this makes me sort of smile. I mean, who would think any citizens might be FOR violence?

Exactly, who would be for violence? Anyone attacking a non-violence group would be seen as being for-criminals.

I hear the argument a lot that the Brady campaign and most anti-gun advocates are really pro-criminal. I understand it and feel it's a correct position but it falls on a lot of deaf ears because the Brady campaign is for ending "gun violence." (Which most of us know is false, they are for gun control)

It could be used to show how the Brady campaign, the Assault Weapons Ban and most gun control legislation has really done nothing to prevent violent crime. How making guns illegal doesn't stop criminals from getting them. We can also talk about how CCW holders help prevent crime and violence.

There's a lot of good information out there but people don't always trust traditional gun groups. I'm working on trying to create a web page that illustrates Brady scores vs Actual FBI violent crime data but as I said in my first post, with two kids, one being a newborn, time is rather short. I'll be sure to keep people here on THR updated.

History is full

of examples of violence protecting life and liberty, Thermopolaye and the American Revolution are examples which come immediately to mind.
Threatening a mother bear's cubs is shorthand for inviting justifiable violence.

You'd also want to actually take steps to combat violence, above and beyond anything related to guns. Maybe push for harsher prison sentences.

I'd actually support a group that pushes for all the following:Increased police patrols, shall issue CCW, harsher prison sentences, educating kids about the dangers of drugs and gangs, and moving people from welfare to work.
We might actually be able to make that work.

Or you could start a neighborhood watch, and tell everyone to get a handgun.(Something simple, a glock or revolver.)
