Citronella for defense against agressive dogs?

Recently a local woman was attacked and mauled by two Pit Bull dogs. The local newspaper had this article in which a person recommended using Citronella spray to deter such dogs.

What do ya'll think?

Thanks

Never heard of it before, but it might work I guess. I myself carry pepper spray and big, honkin' walking stick when I go on my exercise hikes down to Marsh Creek and back. I don't know of any pit bulls around here, but there's a couple of large, black and white cow dogs (the one's with the funny colored eyes) that run a hundred yards down their owner's driveways to tell me I'm "trespassing" on "their" sections of a public road.
I've never had to use the pepper spray yet. I just show the dogs my big stick and they back off, growling and moaning as I walk on by.

Citronella, or any other spray sounds a little mild for a dog that's actually attacking me. I'd be more comfortable with an impact weapon or a firearm, in the most dire of circumstances. Notifying law enforcement, and filing complaints, coupled with changing your route, would be advisable.

Years ago I carried a squirt gun with ammonia every time I went out on my bike. It worked very well and the dogs quickly learned to stay away. It got to the point they would ignore me.
