Over my couple years on THR, a classic piece of advice has been to find a nice Model 10 or Security Six because they are cheaper and arguably better made than new production revolvers.

Now that my 21st is right around the corner, I am doing my window shopping. Since going to any gun store is sort of a trek for me I like to look around online.

The thing is, the only place I can find that has a stock of Model 10s is J&G, and they are $300+

For a little more I know a place I can buy police trade in S&W 686's all day long. $350ish.

Does anyone know of a good online source for these older revolvers, or has the market gotten wise and snatched them all up?

I saw a flyer in shotgun news (I think) for used Model 10's for like 175 or so. Someone posted another link recently on here, and will hopefully do so again, to a place on the internet that had similar prices.

Seems to me there's a gun show every weekend somewhere in Texas. I have bought two M&Ps with 2" barrels (the snubs tend to bring a bit more than the longer guns) for $200 each in the past few months. Put $225 in cash in your pocket and hit the shows. You'll find something.

Malice-- don't get impatient. I know you're ready to go now, but look around a little. Go to the gun shows- you'll find dealers and individuals who have what your looking for at prices less than you will find on line and they can do the deal with ATF on there cell phone in just a few minutes. My recent visits to gun shows lead me to believe that Model 10's are hard to find right now, but later police trade-ins are more available.
There are Ruger's coming back from Canada that are excellent deals if you're not commited to a Smith.
I'd have a real hard time buying a revolver on line. You want to feel it, look at it closely, and see how it fits. Thank God we live in Texas and can do that.
Good luck with your search. Welcome to the wheel gun fraternity.

If you can get around to them, there are four gun shows scheduled around the area in the next couple of weeks: two in San Antonio 11-12 Aug--one at Alzafar Shrine Temple and one at Live Oak Civic Center, Austin 18-19 Aug, and Fredericksburg 25-26 Aug.

Yes, I've been know to make appearances at the San Antonio gun shows. That is certainly an option for me.

No, I am not committed to a S&W by any means. I had some range time recently with a Ruger SP101 in .38 with the 2 inch barrel. Certainly nothing to complain about.

The more I do my window shopping, the more futile it gets. Every time I narrow it down, I change my mind. Hopefully I will be able to get through this rough patch in my life and end up with something I love :D
