For the first time since I bought it, I shot my Garand today. I cleaned the barrel and chamber. How often should I pull the operating spring and clean it and the gas tube? Should I lube the spring or inside of the tube?

hey elk, i pull the spring and wipe it down everytime i clean the rifle.

get a soft cotton 50 caliber bore mop, and clean the inside of the gas cylinder with hoppes. clean the oprod and piston with hoppes and let it dry.

no oil on the piston or inside the gas cyclinder.

as far as lube, if it slides grease it, if it rotates oil it.

light grease on the oprod spring.

i clean out the oprod interior where the spring rides with hoppes, then let it dry and just use a little grease on the spring.

that old garand is a tough son of a gun.

I'm not an expert...this is just how I want to treat my Garand. I clean it when I shoot it because it may be several weeks between range trips. I don't KNOW that the ammo is corrosive, I just treat it like its the most corrosive ever produced. I clean when i get home so I don't forget and so the rifle is ready for the next trip.

I also like to practice the strip/reassembly steps. :uhoh: weird.

lol, it might sound wierd but my trigger group is 3 inches from my keyboard, and i have a funny habit of annoying others trying to watch tv with me by the clicking sounds i make sliding the follower slide back and forth as i watch movies.

A lot of people recommend cleaning the bore, chamber and bolt, but not disassembling the rifle every trip to the range.
The feeling is that each time you remove the trigger group, handguards, gas cylinder lock screw, etc. you will change the lockup and point of aim.
Depending on how much you shoot and how well greased your rifle is, you may only have to do a complete strip once a year.

Myself, I do a complete strip every time I shoot. But that's just me...I enjoy it.:)

Bryan,

Here is a photo of the first five shots from the second enbloc clip. Granted, it is only 50 yards (I didn't have a lot of time and the rain started shortly after we started shooting). I am pleased that I shot that well. I have a bad right eye and typically do not shoot field sights very well. I don't expect MOA out of it. For crying out loud, it is a battle rifle, not a target gun. Thanks.
