March is coming soon and with it my new pump shotgun, a Winchester SXP ordered in the last days of December. Most of my reading here suggests I should thoroughly clean it before I shoot it. I intend to do so. I will completely take it apart when I do. I use Hoppes #9 for my rifles. Is it good for shotguns too or should I buy something else? Oiling is done with Complete gun treatment for my rifles. Is it also adequate for a shotgun? Should I use Remoil instead of Complete gun treatment for my guns? All tips welcomed, though I will not mix my own chemicals as some do.

Just field strip it into basic components.
Receiver group, trigger group, gas piston, and barrel.

DO NOT attempt to take the trigger parts out of the trigger housing, etc.
If you think you have to clean the trigger group?
Hose it out with WD-40 or Rem-Oil and blow it out with compressed air.
The oil film that is left will be just right for slick & protected from rust.

Any Hoppes product will suffice for cleaning the packing oil off.
Hoppes Bore Solvent is not a lubricant oil though.

I have never heard of 'Complete Gun Treatment' so I have no idea what it is.
It might be great stuff?
But Rem-Oil is good in all weather and won't congeal in sub-zero hunting weather if that matters.

For cleaning, any good solvent will do, including cheap brake cleaner (though watch it on plastic), for lubrication, any good oil will do. For choke tube threads, if any, a good grease will be your best option.

On my choke tubes, I use Hoppe's #9 Choke Tube Lube, in all my shotguns, it doesn't matter whether it is my Brownings, Beretta's, or Remington's, I've never had a stuck choke tube using that stuff. It comes in an aerosol can, and is real handy.

Thank you guys. I had not thought about the choke threads... It shows how new I am to shotguns. I shall acquire what is necessary to properly grease that area.

Regarding the Complete Gun Treatment product, see g96.com. I find it amusing that someone as knowledgeable has never heard about it, it might be the only time I ever learn anything to RC! Up here, every sports goods store that is a little serious about selling anything gun related has it on the shelves. Might be just geographic. I will also buy Remoil to see if I like it better; in any case, it won't be wasted. You were right tu assume that cold is an issue I will have to deal with while hunting. Subzero happens to be just about four or five months a year around here.

Don't worry, I never had any intention to disassemble the trigger group itself! I saw what a trigger group looked like when I cleaned the Remington 760 a nice old man gave me... Way too much complication foreseen for my taste. I will only take the group as a whole out to clean the rest.

And I will completely read the instructions again before I proceed. It might seem basic, but that is where I stand for now, right in the middle of basic land!

For those of you who helped me to choose a barrel for a certain rifle project last fall, well, yes, that project was killed when I ordered the shotgun, or at least put on hold for quite a while.

I believe I will be a more complete, efficient and versatile hunter with the upcoming shotgun training Summer then with a second .270 rifle, which would only have helped me to become a better rifleman. I had to make a choice and I did. Also, shotgunning clay looks like a lot of fun I look forward to and I can still shoot the .22 LR for rifle practice.

Again, all tips are welcomed regarding that new endeavour of mine, you are such nice knowledgeable intelligent fellows. You know, some people don't share their knowledge and prefer to keep it for themselves and just laugh at one's misfortune they could have helped to prevent. They are not THR's crowd for sure!
