Any suggestions on care and maintenance of a new Springfield Armory XDS .45 acp. with Melonite barrel. Can I use Hoppe's #9 solvent? Pistol came with a brush. What is Melonite? Any types of solvent that should be avoided with this barrel material?

I was going to PM the question to you (rcmodel), in my mind I knew you would have the answer. Thank you for the fast reply and as always your expert advice is appreciated.

I'm a believer. A few guns of mine have the melonite finish and it cleans up well. I've used Hoppes, Breakfree, and CLP with equal results. Depending on who you ask, it is more robust than chrome since chrome is added after the fact to the barrel whereas Melonite is a process that actually hardens the steel.

Ditto what those guys said.

I have melonited barrels on two AR weapons. The cleaning process is like any other steel barrel (Per the manufacturers). I like to put some Hoppes copper remover through them occasionally.

The Springfield Armory XDs .45 belongs to a friend, but we shot it tonight and I was very impressed with it. Functions well, nice trigger and great sights. Nice little package. I have a 1911 Colt New Agent with the trench sights, and can live with the sights for what the pistol is intended for, but the sights on the XDs are way better. I understand the point concept and the reasons for the trench sights so not to offend any New Agent fans. Just my opinion after shooting the XDs tonight. I'll stick with my Colts, but there is nothing wrong with the XDs.
