So I have had an itch for an air rifle for quite a while since I cant shoot my .22 as much as Id like. I had been doing some research, trying to find a good entry level air rifle, and read that the Daisy 853 was great and had a Lothar Walther barrel to boot. Unfortunately, at around 300 bucks, that was a little out of my range.

Just as I was about to order a cheaper 953, I stumbled into an ad on the CMP website, selling factory remanufactured 853's for $100. So I jumped right on it and faxed in my order.

While I wait anxiously for my Monte Carlo 853, what can you more experienced air gunners tell me about my choice?

The ones I saw looked like they were run over by trucks :p

but the guys that get them say they shoot great and are worth it. A little bit of time and some paint and thay can even clean up well.

They make great lil basement plinkers n target guns!

I had intended on gettin one or two last winter when I went to the north store to get my Kimber but got a second Kimber instead

Well my Daisy 853 showed up today, but I didnt get home from work until after dark, so no shooting report yet.

But here are a few pictures. The rifle is definitely used, but seems to be in really good condition.

Contrary to the above experiences, the stock on mine is quite nice, and though I dont know much about woodworking, I think I detect a bit of tiger striping that may call for a refinish some time

pikid's version of a bench rest for his air rifle. He's been working on a shooting report all morning.

I've also got a 953 for plinking, and I'm surprised at the accuracy I've been able to get out of it; with the peep sights, I can keep JSB pellets inside a dime at 10 metres all day.

Thats about my experience as well, at least in the hundred or so rounds through it today. Cheap walmart pellets will do 5 shots in one hole at 10m no problem. Gotta see what some match pellet will do in the Lothar Walther barrel

From the website sounded like you might need to be a member of a affiliated club to order.

for the fire arms ya need proof of citizenship, age, proof or training and club affiliation/membership.

I though that meant to get anything from them but maybe not...
