mailed off the order form today form. Special grade rifle with the new stock/barrel etc
Ordered 200rds of Ammo (Hornady brass and 150grn bullet) and 25 endbloc clips. I will update as things go and will share pics when it arrives

I am confident you will like it. The typical stock wood is prettier than GI and modern match barrels are superior to anything ever put on a military, or NM rifle. That will raise hackles on some, but I shot enough rounds down range to determine to my satisfaction, it is true.

I’m excited, I’ve wanted an m1 for a long time (20yrs). It’s just one of those things that everyone should have

I'll second what Slamfire said. The Special grades are nice rifles.

I would take one to shoot the matches or target work, but I like the milsurps that may have been in the fight on some battle field world wide.

My CMP Special shoots as good as my older brothers match prepped, Douglas match barreled M1.
I get under 2” at 100yds with match grade ammo. The Criterion barrels are superlative.
Try 48.0gr of H4895 under a Hornady 155gr A-max. Seat to 3.325”oal. LC-69 brass.
Medaled in my first JCG match at CMP Talladega.

You will enjoy your Garand, I enjoy shooting mine more than any other milsurp. It brings a smile everytime I hear "ping". Get some BLO and look into how to apply it, the new stocks I've seen were dry.

+1 to this.

I built a CMP Special at the CMP Advanced Maintenance Class back in January of 2015. All nicely refurbed parts. I picked a Nov. 1943 SA receiver, ser. no. 2,222,xxx and picked as many WWII correct parts as I could identify (uncut op rod, lock bar rear sights, SA trigger group, round-top gas lock) as I could. Criterion barrel is superb, fitment is terrific and the rifle, through which I've shot 56 rounds (1 clip for function at Anniston, 1 bandolier of HXP at my home range). It groups 2" at 100 yards for a clip. My concession to age was the choice of an IHC front sight for its wide ears and very visible blade. Beautiful and wonderful rifle. You can expect to love yours.

As a load, I've found that Master Po's (of the NRA) recommendation of 47 gr. of IMR 4895 under a 168 gr match bullet (I like Sierra MatchKings) works best for me. I use HXP once-fired brass and WLR primers. As an alternative to IMR 4895, you can go with 46.5 gr of H4895. IMR 4064 is also a fine powder for the M1 Garand. I started working up loads from the M1 Garand section of the Hornady manual and have also used Master Po's recommendations and the 1986 NRA American Rifleman article recommendations. BTW, Master Po also has recommendations for the .308 Service Rifle which I use for my M1As.

Good luck and good shooting,

Congratulations on a very special acquisition. Bet you're gonna love it. Let me echo what Nature Boy said; "Can't wait to see it". Did you get a time estimate on when it should arrive ? Hoping to see some pictures of what will surely be a beautiful rifle.

Da hail you say...!

:D

3 MOA - is all I ever ask from a Service rifle from field positions.

A well put together Criterion Bbl'ed M1 should nail that in Spades.

Three 3 MOA is not bad with a rack grade Garand. Bill Maudlin was in the pre WW2 Army and he records all the complaints about the inaccuracy of the Garand compared to the 03 Springfield. The story I remember, is that one of his buds shot a better score standing with the 03 than he did with a Garand, in an effort to prove how inaccurate the M1 was. The Range Officer told the shooter: his feet were flatter than his stomach! However, in combat, where you could not see 30 feet in the foliage, the accuracy of the 03 was not as appreciated as the firepower of the Garand.

Match Garands are a different story, and you build up a NM type Garand, a good barrel shines.

That is actually not bad for me, standing, but all that barrel would do in the other positions was hold the black.

I agree. That is why I have both.

The Special grades get shot while the issued rifles are generally left alone and only shot once in a while. The first Garand that I acquired was built in November, 1941, and last rebuilt by the Red River Army Depot. This rifle will be left as I received it.

I have parts to assemble two Garands. WWII era frames, 1950 vintage NOS barrels and the various other parts necessary to assemble the rifles (I forget whether the history of the gas cylinders off hand). I'll probably add these to my "shooters" group as the "purists" will dispute they will be "real" Garands.

Update: got the email from cmp saying my order form was received and got my log in info as well. Charges hit the credit card and the ammo order shows shipped,

More to follow with the rifle order

Excited for you!

Thats funny, I got my M1 and they never charged my credit card. Some how I figure I paid too much in income tax last year and they are making it up to me. Could be old people get one for free if you were in the service and have an HD. Shoulda' ordered two! :)

Got an email from cmp today, rifle had shipped, delivery says tomorrow? Seems ambitious, but who knows. I’m heading out of town for the weekend and might not get pics up before we leave (assuming it gets here tomorrow)

Someone needs to be there to sign for it, FedEx had mine and I had to chase him down, I was out back when I heard the truck pull out the drive.

I had to put a vacation hold on the ammo and rifle, fedex runs in my neighborhood between 0800 and 2200, so it’s hard to plan for, so the rifle is sitting at the local fedex hub till next Tuesday

Two weeks from mail in the order form to receive the rifle

Made in spring of ‘44 (March I think)
Beyond a preliminary cleaning and lubricating, anything need to be done before I put it to work?
