CO2 pistol for rats?

Steel BBs are undersize so they can be shot through rifled bores without jamming. This means that accuracy isn't very good, except perhaps at pretty close range.

CO2 BB pistols (multishot CO2 pistols in general, actually) tend to be pretty light on power. Rats can be pretty sturdy--you want either pinpoint accuracy for brain (not just head) shots, or some serious oomph to kill them humanely.

Steel BBs ricochet like crazy. Unless you have a controlled environment where you know there's nothing hard downrange in your target area you can get some unpleasant surprises if you start putting BBs in the air.

I wouldn't choose a CO2 BB pistol for use on rats.

Plenty of Co2 pellet Pistols that will do the job.
Here is my favorite Rat Rifle. Love hunting these suckers, Smart critters. The 22.cal pictured has a TKO Shroud. The Noise if virtually totally quiet.Bug Buster Scope lighted recticle is great for low light and will focus at very close range.Steel receiver added and Walther Lother barrel.

He is smart, elusive, Equipped with high power instincts. He can hear my most silent whisper. He knows my habits, when I eat, when I sleep. He hides in the cover of darkness. He taunts me daily. Always with that smug smile he is so well known of. He always has a plan before the attack. Always has a new offensive tactic. He may come out of the cover of the jungled Ivy growing along the fence and ground underneath. Do a quick direct hit on the bird feeder.. Or he may circle around the old Elm tree which will obscure my vision. Always, more creative than the previous hit.

He is always there, watching. Occasionally, late at night, with flash light in hand, I will catch a slight glimmer of his beady eyes in the thick Ivy as he studies me. He will use the dark twisted Jungle, that grows along his escape route by the fence. Watching, laughing, and mocking my feeble attempts to quickly grab my weapon before he is long gone. Once again the bird feeder raided.

"To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a rat. And a rat will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - RAT Cong. So you have to fall back on superior firepower and superior intelligence. And that's all she wrote" as Carl Spackler said so well.

He is known as the Jackal. I will be waiting for you Jack. If it takes me all summer I will smash your little head, right between your beady eyes with a sizzling pellet. I have been doing a lot of practice. And I have a new weapon. The modified Crosman eqipped with a Bug Buster scope so I can see deep down in camouflaged Ivy cover. And look close Jack. See the barrel? It is silent. I can shoot in the middle of the night and none of the neighbors will ever here a sound. You won’t either. Good bye Jack, you are a dead Rat walking.

This is true. You need either a Pump like the Crosman or a PCP. Those with get more power. Also use pointed tip pellets. They will give you a better penetration.

Here is one that is reasonable priced and powerful enough to get the job done

I don't think anyone is going to go out and buy a PCP to kill a rat. Any Pellet gun will kill one. Unless you have some as big as Rabbits.

Rats are vermin and I wonder why folks want to be "humane" It's like all the invasive critters we have down here. Lets all be "humane" when we try to eliminate a Python, Bufo Frog. Giant Iguanas etc. Lets pay hunters to catch them live, then put them in a freezer so as to be kind to them:what:
Ever seen a rat caught on a glue board, now that's a slow inhumane death,??

But that said a pellet rifle is better than a BB pistol

I would want a pellet rifle. Better accuracy especially with a scope. Pellets don't ricochet as easily.

I agree. I was trying to answer the question about "CO2 BB pistols" which tend to be somewhat inaccurate and underpowered. Something like the 2240, particularly with the longer barrel (which really makes it more comparable to a CO2 pellet rifle than a CO2 pellet pistol) has the accuracy and power to do in rats humanely.

An excellently entertaining read. :D

In my limited experience, a CO2 pellet gun with enough barrel on it to make better use of the CO2 power, works fine.

Below is my rat "machine". A .22 cal Crosman 2260 pellet launcher with shortened barrel and flashlight mounted in the stock. I'm betting this barrel (15.5") isn't too much longer than Jeb's "pistol" barrel. :D

I had a Smith & Wesson CO2 pellet (.177 caliber) pistol way back when that was very effective on rats (and this is the gun that started me on the road to handgun hunting). I would imagine more modern CO2 pistols generate considerably more velocity.

Does a co2 bb pistol have enough power to kill rats humanely?

When I was a kid, I sat up on a wall with a spring powered Daisy model 1894 BB gun. On two occasions a rat appeared both of which were killed with a single BB in the head. Your CO2 BB pistol has more than enough power to kill a rat.

I agree with the glue trap....very horrid death.

But no...big bucket of nope.

It is just an animal....doing what animals do, it does not fit into our world so that means you feel it is ok to torture it....that is messed up dude. Just because it is damaging my stuff, and even causing sickness in my farm animals does not mean it deserves to be tortured. Do the "pest" birds deserve the same fate. Squirrel.....Deer are ravaging crops should you rip off its legs and let is die a slow horrid death.....the fox that gets in and kills your chickens....no.

You wonder why....because some people know right from wrong, and some people don't.....putting any living thing down in a humane manner is the right thing to do.

I think you missed your calling in the NKVD, you would have fit right in.

Yep just one of Gods poor misunderstood creatures.:barf:

Any idea of how much damage rodents cause worldwide every year?
Any Idea how many disease they spread. How many people have died due to rats?
How many babies are bit all over their bodies in urban cities?

Did you know rats are cannibals? When the food supply is good, the multiply exponentially. When food is scarce they eat their own young and injured and old members. So if you inured one, they will be eaten by their "buddies"

How do anticoagulant rodentdenticides kill a rat? The bleed to death internally and blood comes out their eyes and mouth,

So no, I care as much about rats as I do Fleas and ticks.

I know the damage they did to me....I know the disease they caused me. I have no love for rats, starlings, pigeons, coyote, fox....the list goes on. However that is no reason to torture them like you suggest.

I also find it interesting that this board will change your comment in the quoted text as well as the original text....you can walk back your comments and no one is any wiser.

A had a Crosman MK I in which the seals went bad. Sent it to a smith who converted it to .22 and enlarged the port. Problem is it's louder than some of my .22 rimfires. Lost all stealth capabilities. I just use my springer .22 pellet rifles. Not as small but quieter and more accurate.

I frequently use my Umerex blowback CO2 pistol in my garage. At 25ft I can get sub 3" groups that will knock a 12oz can off of whatever it is sitting on.

I would say at 10-15ft it would be plenty for rodents. A pellet gun would be more lethal no question.

The bottom gun....
