A Cleaning Kit.
And a firearm of one sort or another. More if you can afford them.

In the meantime, I have a small selection of martial firearms (Garands, GI 1911's, Winchester '97). Everything else is more of a 'working' firearm than a collection (all the other 1911's, M14, AR's, CAS gear, etc.)

A friend of mine has a collection of military guns...his goal is to have one of each of the mass-fielded guns from the major WWII players. The hunt is fun

Stuff ! Yeah,that's the ticket. Every collection should have lots of it. That, and books, gotta' have lots of those.

"... to be a great collection" is a really open-ended question.

I'd say a 22 rimfire rifle and handgun, a 12 gauge pump, a bolt action centerfire rifle of with decent power topped with a scope, a 30-30, 44 Mag or 45 lever action, a 4" barrel 357 Mag revolver, a go anywhere carry gun, a 9mm pistol and a 1911A1 should be on almost everybodys list as should something that shoots .223, a 7.62x39 or a 7.62x54R.

And of course, everyone should have a Garand. A 1903, an Enfield, Nagant, a Thompson, M1 Carbine, a bunch more military rifles, a couple of Mausers, a Borwning HP, a P08, a P38, a Makarov, Webley and a few more will make a pretty good collection. Still not great...

If everyone had the same things in their collections, how boring would that be? Maybe as a guide line, I'd say a 1911, a S&W revolver, a couple of rifles, shotguns, to start and whatever else may tickle your fancy

The Bare Basics include:

I want to be able to: shoot a squirrel, shoot an elk, defend my life. Shooting birds on-wing is a big plus.

If you can "shoot an elk," you can certainly shoot something - ahem - "better."

I don't have a collection. I have a toolbox. So IMO, your assemblage of firearms should be geared to meet YOUR needs.

SA handguns: 1911, Beretta, Glock, HK, SIG
Wheelguns: a single action of some type, one each J-, K-, L-, and N-frame.
Rifles: Garand, Mauser, one FBPP of one type or another

Good start.

I don't consider firearms to be collectors items, but if I wanted to "round things out", my list would include:

1903 Springfield rifle
1911 Colt 45
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
M14 (or M1A equivalent)
M16 (or AR15 equivalent)
Glock 17
Ithaca Model 37 shotgun
Remington 760 rifle
Remington 870 shotgun
Winchester model 70

I think each one of those has a special place in US history. There's more that would be nice to have, but this is a good start. So far I only have three items off the list, but I'm working on it.

Two words...."One More." That is all that is needed to round out the collection.

My personal choices would include lots of .22's.

And when you find a gun you like, you should always have multiples of said guns.

Anything you can stuff in the safe.

Typically, you'd need a decent DA revolver in either .38/.357 or .44mag.

And a .45acp pistol.

And a 9mm pistol.

And a .22 pistol.

Then you need to fill the big part of the safe with longuns, first would be a decent .22lr.

And a Homeland Defense Rifle of the AR or AK sort.

And a .308 or .30-06.

And a 12 guage shotgun.

-CZ (I have one) or if you don't like them another high-cap 9mm
-a wheelgun or many (got em)
-something small for carry, if you're in a carry state or not- laws change people move, be prepared (got one)
-blackpowder revolver (have one)
-a .22 rifle or two (have 3)
-a .22 pistol (need)
-SAA clone or Vaquero (need)
-a bolt rifle with scope (need)
-mil-surplus bolt rifle (need)
-Semi auto commercial rifle (need)
-mil style semi rifle (got an SKS)
-lever rifle or 10 (I have one, more to come)
-blackpowder rifle (need)
-shotgun or several (had one but no more, need one bad)
