Colt .380 Government price check! Update: I bought it!

Hi all.

I found an unfired Colt Government .380 in stainless. It looks to be in pretty much perfect condition, except slight rub marks on the dustcover from the frame.

Doesn't look to be fired. Probably 98-99%. It was definitely a safe queen. Shop is asking $424 + tax.

Opinion on the price?

As a gov 380 owner I would say that is a pretty decent price for a near NIB version. They are great little guns and quite reliable. My one complaint is I got a soft barrel and I am slowly peening up the locking lugs on mine. Some day it will jam and I will have to get a new barrel. SIGH.....

OK, so I bought it.

Came out to $480 out the door. $425 + tax and fees

Now, upon looking closer, there was a small patch of surface rust on the top of the slide. Nothing scotchbrite cant take care of.

The sights suck. Gray front sight, black rear. Anything I can do to make the sights more visible? Any suggestions?

Plastic trigger. Anything or anyone I can buy to replace the trigger to an aluminum trigger? Source?

Magazine. It only came with 1 magazine, how much do magazines for these guns cost?

The slide to frame fit was typical Colt, not all that tight, but I'm hoping the lock-up of this pistol will prove to be quite an accurate shooter.


Any other suggestions or tips for this pistol?

These are not target pistols so don't expect 1 ragged hole at 25 yds. There are no longer metal triggers made that I know of. The plastic works fine I have a Blue Mustang and the slide to frame fit on mine is tight Might be because yours is SS. They have very low recoil compared to say a PPK. I shoot Wally World 100 round pack and carry CorBon HP or the Rem 102GS.
Remember they don't make them any more and some parts can be almost impossible to find. I can't help you on sights I painted mine Orange it helped a little. By the way you got that at a good price.

Paint the front sight black or orange. It helps. Be careful when you take it apart, it LOOKS like a 1911 but it's not.

Neat guns, super small and skinny, lot of bark in a tiny package.

I've never seen a metal trigger... I'd look at Gunparts Corp. It would be nice to have an alumninum trigger.

I lucked upon a blued 380 government for $325 a month or two ago. Here in MD they tend to go from $500 on up. Enjoy the gun they're great except for the sights which you've already mentioned.

Anapex, do you have any plans for your government, such as replacing the plastic trigger, guide rod, sights etc...?

I really want to replace the trigger with an aluminum one, but I heard finding parts for these pistols are very difficult, almost like obtaining a CCW in California!

I paid $400 OTD for my blued Gov .380 about two months ago.

About the only plans I have for mine right now would be a recoil spring swap. I wouldn't mind a metal trigger but I've never found one so I'm not holding any hope for one. Everything else seems to be working fine with it so I'm not gonna touch anything on it until it breaks.

Brownells has some remaining McDougall Ti Mustang #790-108-100 and SS Gov't #790-107-100 guide rods.

If you want them, now's the time.

Cylinder and Slide does work on the little Colt's, and mini-Novaks are available from several sources.

I'm into my Gov't. Pockelite for about $500 IIRC. That seems about average on the auction sites.
