Alright. I took my malfunctioning M1 Carbine back to the Gun shop. 0 Problems returning the gun. And they gave me full credit back in it.

I started to pick up another M1 Carbine but spotted a used 9mm Colt. I have been wanting a 9mm AR for a while and while I am not a big Colt AR fan I thought the price was pretty good. I had to put it on Layaway instead of buying it outright but I plan to have it soon and I want to prepare for it.

It is a 16 inch carbine with A1 style sights and the Old pencil profile barrel.

Now for the questions.

1st off I HATE A1 style uppers. I know there is nothing wrong with them. However, to me they just don't seem right. So the plan is to replace the A1 style with an A2 or A3 style. I am leaning towards A2 right now since I don't think I will be using Optics on this gun.

So my question is this. Should I be able to just transfer everything from the A1 style upper over to the A2? I know the Shell deflector is removable on the Colts, so it should be able to snap in. But since I have never messed with a 9MM AR before I want to make sure there is nothing I am missing.

Secondly, the Guns finish isn't great. It is an older gun and has been used as a gun should. But I am a bit of a perfectionist. So I would like to have the receiver refinished. Can it/Should it be re-anodized, or should I consider Duracoat instead. I am aware that this could hurt the resale value of the Colt, but I am not in this for re-sale, I am in this to have a gun I can use for a LONG time. WHich finish would be the most durable on an AR?

Finally, I understand that Colts use UZI mags correct? Does anyone have a good source of the info to convert the mags over to AR use?

As always, thanks for the help guys.

This is a good question for the AR15 forum. I had the same questions, but ended up just putting an ARMs mount and an Aimpoint on the carry handle.

IMO, the A1 upper is the way to go if you're not using optics or shooting matches. I have one on my Bushmaster and I love it, very simple, and impossible to adjust by accident. In my case, if I decide I want optics later, I'll buy a flattop upper.

Pretty sure that the colt does not use uzi magazines, but rather Colt 9mm magazines. A few other 9mm ARs do use uzi magazines (Olympics, I think), but I do not believe that the Colt 635s do.

CProducts makes those at an almost reasonable price.
