According to ATF site..

"Firearms automatically attain C&R status when they are 50 years old. Any firearm that is at least 50 years old, and in its original configuration, would qualify as a C&R firearm. It is not necessary for such firearms to be listed in ATF’s C&R list. Therefore, ATF does not generally list firearms in the C&R publication by virtue of their age. However, if you wish for a classification of your particular firearm under categories (b) or (c) above and wish your item to be listed, you may submit the weapon to the Firearms Technology Branch (FTB) for a formal classification."

Question is.. does this mean early production AR-15's are now C&R eligible?

Interesting question.

Were they even selling AR-15s 50 years ago or were they all M-16s?

I don't remember the exactly when AR-15 were available, but I think it was after 1962.

From Wikipedia, but they do give a source for the statement:

"Colt then marketed the Colt AR-15 as a semi-automatic version of the M16 rifle for civilian sales in 1963."

So next year AR-15s will start becoming C&R eligible.

And you see how many C&R 1911's?

My Model 70 is over 50 years old. Is it C&R?

I don't think your going to be seeing AR's for sale to C&R's.

How many of us, besides rcmodel, might have one that old? :D

There are plenty of 1911s and Model 70s bought with C&R licenses. You're not going to see them on the surplus market, but that's totally different than qualifying as C&R.

And yes, if your Model 70 is over 50 years old, it is C&R
