I recently noticed that Colt LE6920's have been discontinued. Does this mean that these guns will now be collectible and have more value? Should the people who own them stop shooting them to preserve their condition?
Does anyone here own a gun that has been discontinued and has become a collector's item that increased in value?

I'm no expert, but I'm sure there are some people out there who would pay more for one in the future, simply because they are no longer made. They are being replaced by the 'Sporter' model, which has a different rollmark. So if someone 'had' to have that 6920 rollmark, they may be willing to pay extra for it.

So yes, to SOME people, it may be worth more. Not everyone though.

I certainly wouldn't quit shooting mine if I had one simply because there might be a money making opportunity out there someday. There are no guarantees, and that's a helluva rifle to put down simply to make a few bucks.

Doesn't look discontinued on Colt Defense website.

At any rate, there are about a gazillion of them out there in use, and a used one isn't going to get any more valuable then it already is.
(Unless there is a grandfather clause in the next assault rifle ban.)

A new unfired one, still in the box maybe would command a premium collector price years from now, but I wouldn't bet on that either..

I wouldn't want to make money on it. I just want to know if the value will increase. I might want to get another AR and make the Colt 6920 a safe queen.

Where did you hear that they are discontinued? They have always tried to market them to "law enforcement" although they are perfectly legal for non-law enforcement civilians to buy.

Also, in the past Colt seems to have made them in batches. Sometimes they would be everywhere and other times difficult to find anywhere.

You heard wrong. LE6920 are out there and available. But they also have the new None LEO marked ones for people who don't want the Rollmark.

I found out they are discontinued from budsgunshop.com from an ad where they were selling their last ones. Then I found more info on ar15.com. I found it hard to believe too.

I just grabbed a Colt 6720 from my local GS. It is sweet and came with two 20 round pmags instead of the the standard aluminum. I was a little dissapointed to find the serial number was just a hair over 1000. That would have made it an interesting collector piece. Either way i still haven't decided if i'm gona slap on some goodies and run it or just put it in the collection section of my collection. I've already got other ARs to practice with. I've also heard that Colt is going to stop putting the LE/Military Use Only mark on them which could raise the value of those with it.

I have found no official info about them being discontinued.
I would never believe anything posted on AR15.com.

As for Buds are you sure they are just not carrying them anymore?

Go to budsgunshop.com and check for yourself. They say discontinued LE6920's and LE6940's in their "Special Deals" ads. They are being replaced by the "Sporter" versions.

Maybe they are simply choosing not to sell the 6920 anymore and moving their inventory strictly to the Sporter model?

From what I've read, the SP6920 is the same as the LE6920, but without the "Restricted, Law Enforcement Only" rollmark. Colt is actually two companies. Colt's Manufacturing which sells commercially and Colt Defense which sells to the military and police. After the AWB ended the LE6920s were being sold on the commercial market since Colt's Manufacturing only had the match target models. This is really an internal management issue designed to make a sharper distinction between the commercial and defense/LEO side.

The LE6920 is the same rifle as the SP6920, just a different roll mark. It appears Colt is dropping the pretense of not selling certain rifles to the general public and going back to the Sporter line.
