Colt Trooper - DOB?

Greetings Members,
Can someone direct me to a site where Colt serial number / manufacture date information can be found? I've recently inherited my Uncle's service revolver (.38 special) and would like to know something of it's history. If anyone has this info the serial number is 908801.

Your Trooper may have been the first built in 1955. Serial number information for most Colts (although it is not the most up-to-date source) is available at www.proofhouse.com.

My reference book on Colt serial numbers by RL WIlson also shows that exact number to be the first Trooper made in 1955.

If you need more history, you will have to pay for a Colt Historical Letter. It may be worth it with this revolver since it may well be the first. For me, it would depend on condition whether or not the letter would be a good decision.

I thank you both for your quick and helpful responses. Until his retirement, my uncle was a guard in the Federal prison system in Missouri & Indiana. I don't know if his revolver ever saw use beyond the firing range as it is in good condition (only shows holster wear) and will be kept that way. It's also now retired.

BTW, the proofhouse site didn't list this model but did have serial numbers that matched, listed under "Official Police & Marshal". In that category the serial number indicates 1966. Since both of you list a date of 1955 I'll go with that.

Who at Colt would I write to for such a letter? Any idea what the cost might be?

Zeeemu, Colt's Manufacturing keeps all of the records. Here is a link to the information for an archival request. I believe the letter will cost you $100, but would certainly be worth it to future generations if you plan to pass the gun down. With the holster wear the gun will not inherently be a collector's piece except to you and yours, to which I assume the sentimental value will make it worth more.
