Some folks may recall that I acquired a barrel in 7.62x25, for a 1911, and have kicked around the idea of running the Tokarev round in the grandest American pistol. The stumbling block has always been the OAL length, which is a good .100" longer than a typical .38 Super with ball ammo. The Chinese allegedly reworked the inside of captured 1911's, to fit longer magazines. I have one of the magazines, but it won't fit inside any of my pistols. I'm sure as hell not whittling on the inside of any 1911 frames :what:

After some tinkering, I realized the 7.62x25 rounds I have will fit singly loaded into a .38 Super mag. In addition, by carefully loading, one can squeeze three or so into the same mag. :scrutiny:

I went ahead and fitted the Chicom barrel to my Colt Enhanced .38 Super. My other Super is a Springfield, and it is set up for a ramped barrel. The Chinese barrel fitted up reasonably well to the Colt, except for the fact that the barrel was a wide hood model, and the late Colt is a narrow style. After the necessary file work and other fitting, I found the Colt will feed the rounds out of a Metalform .38 Super Magazine. The Colt Magazine has a slightly longer release point, and hangs up the metric bottleneck case. This Colt has never, ever jammed with a .38 Super load, so I really can't be too disappointed :)

The factory Super extractor appeared to have the correct tension for the 7.62x25 cases, however the OAL of the rounds is too long to eject a loaded round. One must dump the magazine, then push the back of the case out from under the extractor, letting it fall down the mag well.

Tomorrow I'm adding some rubber grips to it, in place of the nice bocote grips, finding some better safety glasses, and going shooting. Results and pics to follow. :)

(edited to fix a typo)

Well, I still have all my fingers....

Nothing terribly exciting, just the case locking up tight as a drum inside the chamber. It seems the chamber in the neck area is quite rough, and the brass thoroughly locked itself into the chamber. No blown cases, or anything else too wierd. I fired one shot and had to take the gun home to extract the stuck case. :fire:

I believe the project is do-able, after I acquire a 7.62x25 reamer, or some other method to assure smooth extraction. Oh well.

Hello all,

New to the forums. I figured I'd join as any kind of search I do for information on weird and wonderful gun related stuff, ends at THR, somehow!

I'm very interested in a modern autoloader chambered in 7.62x25. My initial thoughts were to go with the 1911 frame as well, as they are very available, even as 80% castings and are customization friendly.

Open up the magwell and magazine, get a 9mm slide and a 7.62x25 barrel made up and there you go. Biggest problem would be the magazine. Unless you can modify a CZ52 magazine to fit the 1911 envelope.

Regards
BS

The problem with a CZ52 mag is it does not have feed lips that a 1911 needs to feed the cartridge. This sound like a fun proposition, I would like to see how this works out.

Apple a day:
I haven't done this myself - yet! I've been thinking about it and wanted to know if anybody actually managed to get a project like this going.

The CZ52 mags would take quite a bit of work to make them function in the 1911- because of the feed lips issue, but nothing is impossible if you are persistent or stupid enough :D

I've been considering the Glock platform, especially the 10mm glocks. It would be great, except that it would be way more expensive than working off a 80% 1911 frame.
Also, how will I work on the slide. The Glock slides are pretty much a matter of you get what you get. Is there a slide to convert a 10mm to a 9mm? The case head on the 7.62x25 and 9mm are basically identical. If we could get a 9mm slide to fit on a 10mm lower and get a 7.62x25 barrel made up - the only real challenge would be the magazine lips. A little bending and filing and that should be taken care of. The 10mm cartridge COL is about 0.02" shorter than the TOK cartridge, but there is room in the magazine from what I could see.

A good platform would be the Witness guns. Start with a gun in .38 Super and use the 10mm mags and a new 7.62x25 barrel.I wonder if Tanfoglio has made this gun in 30 Mauser?
