A while back I had Mernickle make me a holster for my SR1911 9mm Commander. The muzzle just comes to the bottom of the holster perfectly. Now I have two 1911s with 5 in barrels. Can I use the short holster for them as well? About 3/4 of an inch of muzzle end protrudes below the holster bottom. The triggers fit just like the Commander trigger does. Is that safe? Is it otherwise okay?

Banging the muzzle when you sit in an arm chair and launching the gun out of the holster could also be an issue, though admittedly not that big of an issue with a Government in a Commander holster which are pretty close in size rather than in a "slide" type open bottom holster.

I have one of these El Paso Saddlery High Slide's ( https://epsaddlery.com/product/high-slide/ ) I use with a Government model. I've banged the muzzle on arm chairs a few times, and if not for a quick elbow grab, the gun would have been on the floor. I've also ripped back pocket seams with repeated presentations as the muzzle contacts my rear pocket.

I have always looked at holsters that leave the muzzle hanging out in the breeze to be....dumb. But they sell a lot of them.

The front sight will be likely to snag during the draw. If not, then it should be useable, if not ideal.
I took a look at that and found the front sight back side doesn’t clear the bottom of the holster. So it can’t snag.

Galco and others put a flared channel in the bottom forward edge to clear the front sight. Lots of professional types used jackass/jak-slide, bikini type minimalist holsters for 1911's including the FBI, Jeff Cooper et all.

You will wear the bluing on your slide against your pants over time if the muzzle end pokes out.

There are all kinds of holsters out there, have Mernickle make you one for a 5 inch gun or practice with what you have and see if it works.
