Hey all,
Going to be taking my state required carry permit renewal class tomorrow morning. It consists of a 3-4 hour safety lecture and a 30 round qualification. I understand the need to be updated on legal changes and the need to renew to confirm eligability. My question is what other states require this follow up? Original class was 16 brutal hours of totally useless information and about 20 minutes of actually real information. Do those of you required to take such classes gain anything or do you just see it as a burden or a hoop to jump through to prevent people with just a casual interest in self defense from carrying a firearm? Anyone renewed their illinois permit yet, if so how long did it take for it to all clear the state police?
I did a change of address in 2016, which cost $70-80 (FOID&ccw permits) if i remember correctly and that didnt renew my foid card, i had to renew a year later. Just seems like its designed to complicate things and keep law abiding citizens from easily renewing their permit.
(I hope i posted this in the correct section)
Thanks

Illinois seems to do lots of things to discourage gun ownership. One more would not surprise me.

In AR: We have a basic Concealed Handgun Carry License (CHCL), and an Enhanced CHCL. You have to take a take a class and qualify at the range for them. You can take the ECHCL class on the same day as the CHCL class. To renew, you have to re-qualify at the range with an instructor and send in your fee.

I bought a life-time permit years ago, no class, no qualifications.
Things are different in Indiana.

My wife has been avoiding taking the 16 hour course because she has trouble giving up the time. So the tactic worked in her case, she would likely only carry now and then but would like the option. Even for me to give up half a saturday, isnt a huge deal but i know for sure i will gain maybe 10 minutes worth of good info if im lucky. The other thing is the cost here, originally i paid $250 for course, $60 for finger printing, some fees to the state $100-150+/-, by the time they granted me part of my 2nd amendnent rights i was in $500 , an entire weekend, 2 hours in the application process on their site and a ton of frustration. Lests hope renewal goes easier - course is $100, im taking it from a small local shop that i took my florida permit class at- hes very efficient with time. Well see.

I think it's just crap to discourage people from keeping their permit.

Here in Virginia, we renew by mail every 5 years. No class, no re-certification, just $35; that's it.

Yes
But if your renew is com8mg up and you’re moving it can be a pain if you don’t know about that the permits are issued by the county court. Not a biggie in most cases but it was for me.

Otherwise right now, an NRA approved class, and military training meet the initial requirement. And no follow up is needed.

I suspect if black face Gov Dr Baby Killer Northam and AG Herring have their way we will have all sorts of stupid requirements.

Another thing the IL system does is generate a TON of revenue for the state. I recently sent mine in... should be coming back any day now... but the renewal class was $100 (was supposed to be less and was just a power point slide show... lame) and the state fee was... um like 100-150... i dont remember exactly but it was steep... i was suprised even being used to IL costs..

Sorry for venting a bit.

Im venting myself, its frustrating. The cost is high but i can deal with it, the time wasted is what kills me. Im a super busy guy with a full time job, a one and a half year old, a pregnant wife who works full time, a large yard that requires constant maintenence, an insaine dog and on and on. Illinois want to make it tough, it stinks. At least i get to shoot a little today

In MI you need a visit to the County office.
Renew $115- 4-5 YEARS DEPENDING ON BIRTHDAY
Fingerprints-$15
Photo-$15
Parking--FREE
Ain't we lucky !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Missouri you go to your local sheriffs office, pay the fee and your good to go. Renewal is every 5 years. Actually don’t need CCW in Missouri. I keep mine in case I travel to a state that requires one.

Alabama
Permits are granted from 1-5 years. Fee is set by county. My county is 15.00 annual. Retired military are free. Legislation being "reintroduced" to drop the fee for all (Many sheriffs are against the freebie). No fingerprinting, classes, or any of that stuff.

I paid with mycredit card....,but $150 sticks in my mind. I am not sure because I bought some ammo, and paid my instructor too.
I will look for my papers. The renewal was submitted by my instructor on the spot via the internet

Nice of the instructor. I use a shop called glock krieg in wauconda, small shop. If youre ever in the area its a great place to stop in, the owner is a good guy. Half of his inventory is stuff us illinoians cant touch- short barreled rifles, machine guns/sub guns, suppressors ect. But sweet to look at, other than that inventory is small. Krebs customs (great ak builder) is on that block too but i dont think he allows many vistors, but glock krieg gets stuff from them if needed.

In Wisconsin you take a 4 hour class at the local Tech college for $15. No shooting involved, but they check to see if you can handle a gun in a safe manner. CCW is good for 5 years and renewal is done on line and it cost $22 the last time I renewed.

No class needed for me, my hunters safety card worked just fine. I'll find out about renewal later this year when mine is up.

Here i am, 3 months later still with no response from IL state police. Permit expired sunday (19th) , a fairly well informed friend of mine said my permit is valid if i can prove my paperwork has been submitted - any thoughts? Headed into the dreaded and horrible crook county this morning to buy jewlery for my wife (not bringing cash but will be leaving with valuables) , so i will not be comfortable unarmed but want to stay legal. Illinois is charming.
