About a year ago ...... one of the younger guys (25) at one of my clubs was asking about my carry piece ... snub at the time. He is on the road a bit in the area and had thought of CCW but always dismissed it ..... I encouraged him to go ahead.
However ...... he is mainly a rifle guy .. hunting etc and not much for handgun shooting on any scale... so - he left it be, with the odd reminder from me. About 6 weeks ago we had a gun raffle evening and the subject cropped up again .... he had just got his CCW and a piece ... albeit a humble Hi-Point!!! Got him to get some practice in next day and at least established that a) .. ''this one'' (Hi-Point) shoots reasonably .... and b) so can he.!
He called this evening ... appropos nothing in particular, but mentioned how glad he was to have been carrying. He had gone to make an end of day delivery, not that far away ...... it was half dark and he went to drive into his destination .. a long driveway ... only to find three ''persons'' blocking his way, just off the roadway.
Said ''persons'' were wearing masks and initially he thought trick-or-treat kids. It seems not ... or at least, if they were they had another agenda as well. Two advanced toward his truck and one produced a hand axe .... making a gesture it seems suggesting ''let's have your money''. 'Axe wielder' continued toward him until outside of the driver's door .... making further menacing moves with the axe.
He (let's call him John) ..... felt decidedly threatened .... and not knowing what other weapons the others may have had .. decided to show his piece. It immediately had the desired effect and the punks vanished into the brush........ quickly.
He completed his delivery .. called the cops and explained the event and his actions..... (not seeing them again on way out - tho he was VERY alert!)He had a visit today from one of the local cops just to take a statement but otherwise seems all was well. There had been another similar incident it seems ... maybe the same punks.
This was all pretty much how he described it.
Only mention this cos ...... IMO he could have had a different possible outcome if not carrying .. he sure felt as much and sorta thanked me for encouraging him to get sorted out. He also (fortunately) took to heart my suggestion that .... carry is carry .... it's for all the time and not just now and then (my view anyways).
Just struck me as yet another vindication for carry .... despite the fact that this area is by and large not heavily ''criminalized''... made my day!
