I have noticed that a couple of companies offer either a brass or steel ramrod/cleaning rod for the 1853 Enfield. Which one is historically correct, and did one come before the other, or is the brass rod something new just to save on wear and tear of the bore?
Thanking you in advance for your help and information .

Steel, with a unique slotted and jagged head. The head could be used for cleaning as well as loading the rifle.
