I recently aquired a 1954 Marlin 39A (22 Lever Action) in a very used condition. The stock neeeds work and the metal has some light surface rust on some spots and a uneven brownish patina on other spots. I would like to restore the rifle as a possible gift to my daughter (likes lever actions). The stock work I can do, but have never needed to have any guns reblued. I would like a deep luster bluing for the metal. Does anyone have any ballpark guess as to what a decent bluing job would cost?

thanks in advance.

For a GOOD blue job, that's done right, you will be in the $200.00 + area...

Check out Hot Flash Refinishing. They reblued a Win Model 12 shotgun for my son and it looks fantastic.

Yes, a good reblue job can cost money, most of which will go into the dis- and re-assembly of the rifle and the polishing. Once set up, the rebluing operation itself costs little, but EPA regulations (and local and state laws as well) put so many restrictions on hot tank blue that many gunsmiths have gone to options like various kinds of what is essentially paint, though with fancy names.

For a special gun I would settle for nothing less than a good blue job, even if I had to send the gun away or do some of the work (like takedown) myself.

"...restrictions on hot tank blue..." Also requires a room with no other ferrous metal stuff in it. The salts in the air will cause a hoare frost of rust on everything ferrous.
As mentioned, 0000 steel wool and light oil will deal with the rust. Hot bluing starts at $200ish. Where you are matters too. There's a guy in Emerson, NE who wants $280 depending on the required level of finish.
