I am aware that I need brass with boxer primers. Excluding the cost of brass about how much does it cost to reload 7.62x54R. I did some superficial searching and found about 17 cents for powder, 3 cents for primer, and 16 cents for a bullet. At 36 cents neglecting cost of tools and brass this seems a little expensive. Am I in the ballpark or do I need to find a cheaper supplier?

Partizan is what I use...pretty cheap and good brass....I will not shoot surplus from my SVT or PSL.

I come up with about .13 for powder. Figuring on something like H4895 bought in bulk from an online vendor.

+1
PPU brass for the x54R costs about the same as the cheap 308 ammo for the 1st firing. It is then ready to reload.

Let us now how it shoots. I hope it does good. I have a mosin that had some funky holes drilled in it so I made a new bolt handle and am going to put a scope mount on it since the thing is bubba'd anyway.

you can get it cheaper if you are just plinking
load it with a ball #1 or #0 buckshot (.30 and .32 respectively) and just enough powder to get it going
******(this is NOT standard reloading, you will not find these loads in standard catalogs and creating for finding a recipe and using it is wholly at your own risk)*****

there are recipes out there, but like the above, use at your own risk. Not a distance round but it'll give you a down load for punching paper at 25 -100 m

Don't forget the shipping. That puts it on about a par with reloads.

But ...

1) your reloads will not be corrosive
2) as you don't need to punch holes in Nazi's at 2000 meters, you can load a much lighter round and spend less money at your orthopedic surgeon.

And yes, I reload this round.

Shipping IS of course a factor, both for assembled ammo and components also subject to hazmat charges. My local gun shows often sell milsurp in spam cans of 440 for $90, or $0.20 per shot.

Actually I was hoping to make something like this 46 grain hollow core "short range" ammo for plinking I just don't want to shoot corrosive surplus in my PSL. Smallest bullet i could find was an 85 gr. I plan to use .308 dia bullets since I think that would be easier on my barrel than .311 and I don't care if there's a little accuracy lost due to the bullet being slightly smaller.

I am a complete noob as I have yet to reload anything. I do however fully understand the risks and dangers in creating your own loads. I like Shadow 7D's idea of using buckshot. I found this source for .310 dia shot Thanks for the links and info. I think I might give it a try after doing some more homework.

it ain't original, search the web, there are loads that some pretty serious reloaders have worked up, I do believe that one commented that it made his mosin feel like a .22.
