Maybe this is an unfeasible idea, but is there any way that a .308 bolt action rifle could be modified to accept G3/CETME mags? Or, is there already a bolt action rifle that exists that takes them? They're just soooo cheap :) I also think a bolt action with a 20 rnd detachable magazine would be cool.

Any thoughts?

I have always been on the lookout for a Spanish FR-8 (I passed on them in the early 90's when they were $125), they were Mausers re-barreled for .308 when Spain adopted the Cetme rifle.

I imagine an FR-8 or other Mauser in .308 with a 20 rounder would be feasible, not my cup of tea personally, but what the heck.:) I am sure an industrious person could modify the mag area to accept detatchable magazines.

There have been Remington 700's converted to accept M-14 magazines.

The G-3 mag conversion could probably be done, somehow to some make of rifle, it would require the fabrication of a magazine well capable of accomadating G-3 magazines, and would require a push-button side magazine release. Anything that I could possibly envision would require a lot of custom work. The cheap surplus G3 mags that we are seeing right now are only going to be cheap for so long- the supply is finite. In the future, I could forsee there being problems with mag availability. Why spend all this time designing and marketing a conversion, that would experience only a very limited marketshare at the present (how often do you see someone at the range with a converted 700?)

M-14 mag converted 700s are a much better bet- there are still several companies making M-14 mags in a variety of capacities in addition to GI surplus, and there is no sign of production ceasing any time soon.

There are also several rifles that use factory detachable magazines, in hunting capacity, naturally.

A smooth bolt action with a large mag capacity could make for a nice rifle. Being about to reload with a 20 round mag is even better.

mp510,

I do not know about Civilian HK51/91 rifles, but actual G3s had both the button release and a flapper magazine release like on the M-14, Mini-14 ,AK, etc. I do not know how it worked but would bet that the release could be made without having access to a button magazine release.

No one seems to have mentioned fixed high capacity magazines like the MG13 mags on M98 Mausers or BAR magazines on US M1903 series rifles.

Any high capacity magazine of traditional type and traditional location means you can not get as low in the prone position. Given one still has a bolt action rifle, will a 20 shot removable magazine make up for exposing another 7 inches of your self to enemy fire? WHile Zombies may be no problem both fish bowl helmeted aliens and the reborn 43rd Mongolian Horde might like having their target increased in size by almost double.

It really shows how slow the firearms manufacturers are to respond, but it has taken a very long time to have detectable magazines on commercial bolt rifles. And the ones that are out there, are three round, or some ridiculous low number .

When the “classic” bolt gun ruled the Highpower Match rifle category, some folks had their rifles converted from stripper clip to magazine fed. If you have ever shot Highpower you know that you have to reload five rounds at some point during the rapid fire stage. A stripper clip has a lot more failure mechanisms than a box magazine, even though a box magazine is a little longer to replace and insert. I have had stripper clip rounds autoeject, get bunched up and jam, bunch up and only allow four rounds in the magazine, and have had the top round just roll off on the ground. Sometimes stripper clips get stuck in the slot, and instead of bottoming out in the receiver, stay jammed midway. When you push on the cartridge column, the cartridges just roll out of the receiver instead of going into the magazine. I have jammed my thumb on the side of the receiver stripping cartridges. Used to have fun ejecting the empty stripper clip by pushing the bolt forward. Then one day the blasted stripper clip instead of ejecting out, ejected forward, and got between the bolt face and the back of the receiver. Causing a jam. Magazines are just more reliable and sure.

Mo’s used to do magazine conversions of rifles such as the M70, M700. Mo does not have a web site, so I don’t know if he still offers this service. It is not cheap.

I only saw a few people with magazines in their bolt gun. I do not think converted bolt guns as reliable as the stock rifle. I have know home piddlers who have tried to convert their bolt rifles to feed from M14 mags, and it did not work for them. I believe it is because dimensions are very critical when it comes to feeding and extraction. Probably a couple of thousandths, maybe hundredths, and the whole thing becomes unreliable.

Personally I would like a five, ten, or twenty detachable round box magazine on a bolt gun. I think it is a great idea. However, with the exception of Lee Enfields and K31’s, you are not going to find one. Even the Swiss, with that great K31, could have created extended round magazines for that rifle, and guess what, I have never seen one.

If I were to convert a bolt rifle to an extended mag, I think the K31 would be the place start. Straight pull, accurate, powerful.

Armalon PR based on Rem 700 comes in 5.56mm (M16 mags) or 7.62mm (M14 mags).

Mags would be a bit pricier though :(

Wow, thanks for all the replies. Guess my idea wasn't as far out as I thought :) My bolt action experience has mostly been with Remington 700BDLs, so that's what I had considered for an action. The thing about availability is a good point, m14 mags will likely be around a lot longer, but dang, they're pricey.

Not personally Bergeron, but I know they're popular for service rifle and highpower competitions here. Here's some action shots in that role:

If you're interested in a 5.56mm bolt action with a detachable magazine, consider the straight-pull AR15s we make in the UK (with which the Armalon competes):

You can pimp it of course ;)
