Ejection of spent cases from my CZ-100 (.40 S&M) has gotten erratic over the last few boxes of ammo. Cases will go anyhwere from straight up and back, to straight up and onto my head, to barely clearing the gun. A significant fraction are getting dents on the case mouth from banging against the breech block.

I shoot factory ammo (UMC or Winchester, whatever's cheap at Wally World), I keep the gun clean, and I am not limp-wristing the gun.

Any thoughts on what might be happening? It's under warranty, but I'd hate to spend 10% of the original purchase price to get it in for service.

Have you had any stove-pipe jams?

Yupp-o. Had one today where the case flipped end-for-end, and jammed base forward, case mouth towards me, in the ejection port.

Looking at it, I think the problem might be related to an aftermarket Promag magazine I bought a few weeks back.

When seated in the mag well the feed lips on the Promag are visibly higher and closer together than those of the 2 factory mags I have. They actually touch the ejector (which in this gun is a prong of sheet metal).

In addition, the Promag's magazine follower touches and is actually depressed by the ejector. Due to being differently shaped, the mag follower in factory magazines never comes near the ejector.

My working hypothesis right now is that the Promag bent the ejector slightly away from where it's supposed to be.

Looks like I've got some calling to do tomorrow.

Before you send the gun away - try a couple things.

For a few bucks you can get new springs from Wolff. For another few bucks, you can get a different brand of ammunition that the cheap stuff.
Clean the gun really good and then try different ammo.
If that doesn't work, clean the gun really good again and try a different spring weight... up or down.
If all else fails, send it to CZUSA. Mike will take care of you. You might have something going on with the extractor or the ejector... hard to say. But if you change ammo and all the sudden the gun is right as rain again - well, then there you have it.

When I called Wolff a few months ago, the person with whom I spoke indicated that they do not make springs specifically for the CZ100. However, a gentleman over on CZForum.com (link here) has indicated that the Wolff springs for the PCR do work in the CZ100.

In any event, the 40S&W version of the CZ100 is severely undersprung and desperately needs a stronger recoil spring (CZ USA says the 9mm and 40S&W versions use the same spring). The frame feels like it is battering itself to death when shooting commercial ammo--I reload a special batch of reduced power 40S&W rounds specifically for my CZ100.

For the 40 S&M...lol Use the 20# Wolff spring for the CZ Compact/Witness Compact. Clean the hell out of your gun.....tooth brush, dental pick etc.
If youre using Break free...try Miltec or Armalube or FP10 for lube.
Junk the ProMag quickly and use OEM CZ mags.....use good ammo and you shouldnt have any more problems.
Shoot well

You know this for a fact, as in you done it yourself or seen it written up by a trustworthy source?

I know people who have done it.....the CZForum is full of tips like this. The PCR in the thread is another version of the compact. If it doesnt like it..which it may or may not...try the 18# spring.
Shoot well.....................

springs

For the 40 S&M...lol Use the 20# Wolff spring for the CZ Compact/Witness Compact.

I'm looking at Wolff's site (http://www.gunsprings.com/SemiAuto/EAANF.html#RecoilCompact), and seeing 2 different part numbers:

Stock No. 499xx.....EAA Compact pistols only.....$ 7.89 ea
Stock No. 433xx.....CZ, TZ, P9 and all other Compact models.....$ 7.89

Which would be appropriate?

I'm at the point of being willing to try this. The gun went in to CZ, who replaced the firing pin and ejector to deal with the jams I had. I got it back a couple weeks ago, shot it last weekend. No jams, but ejection is still here and there and everywhere, and it's still banging up half the brass.

I asked CZ-USA about it. As long as it's not actually jamming (which it didn't, though given what it does to some of the brass I think it's still a possibliity), it's good by them.

CZ springs....not the witness stuff. Id advise you to replace the Mag springs at the same time as well. Get the standard CZ75 fullsize mag springs or the +5% CZ Compact mag springs...both should work well for the 100 mags.

20 lb spring on order. We shall see. Remind me again what factory cz100 springs are.

Magazines I really haven't had a problem with, other than being difficult to load the last cartridge.

Nailing the exact spring weight on the CZ100 would require a spring guage, they arent the most accurate in their approximation. The 20# will do you just fine.

The mag springs and recoil spring work togethor...the faster slide speed on the return to battery with the heavier spring..may enlighten you to a weakening mag spring...thats the only reason for the tip.

If you cant get the last round in ...their probably fine. But then again....these are CZ springs were talking about....LOL :D

There's always more I need to learn about this stuff ....

I'm assuming that stove-pipe problems are related to the extractor...

I don't see how the mag might be causing the extraction-related problem you mentioned (as in stove pipes, etc.) That's because the mag is generally "out of the picture" until the next round is ready to be fed -- unless it just doesn't fit right and is pressing against the slide or otherwise preventing free slide movement.

A new FACTORY mag might resolve that part of the puzzle. (I'm not sure changing springs will help resolve THIS part of the problem.)

It really sounds more like a recoil spring or extractor/extractor spring problem (and I'm not at all sure about the recoil spring).

Its the ERRATIC nature of the problem that I find so puzzling -- since the recoil spring just shouldn't behave all that much differently with each shot, unless the ammo itself is very erratic.

(The same might be said of the extractor spring too, though... but stove pipes are generally extractor-related.)

I got the 20lb spring CZ Compact spring yesterday. I installed it. I ran a box of ammo through it.

Unfortunately, for my gun, it looks like this is _not_ the fix. Anybody want a 20lb Wolff spring for the CZ Compact?

With the 20# spring installed...did your problem change? Or is it exactly the same? Just curious.

Walts correct Stove pipes can be extractor related....or Recoil spring related also. If the slide speed is to high/slow to coordinate the slide speed with the mags "topping the top round out"..so the slide can catch/feed it...youll have problems also...thus the mag spring change recommendation.
If I remember correctly the mag springs are good as your cant load the mags all of the way.....

If your serious.....Ill take the 20#er.....Ill pm you.
Shoot well

Ejection was unchanged -- still here and there and everywhere.

I had a couple failures to feed, hung up on the feed ramp, IIRC. And a couple jams where the round cuaght between the slide and breechblock on the way out.
