I was in a chain store today and they had a CZ 452 Special for $219. I've been thinking about a .22lr rifle for a while now and this seems to be one heck of a value. What are your opinions of this rifle and the price they are asking? Are there any other non-semi auto rifles I should be considering in this price range? This would be for plinking, possibly some small game hunting, and eventually to get my boys started in the shooting sports.

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Never heard of one called "special"

But they are the best value in a .22 rifle today. I LOVE my CZ 452 Scout!

I was at the gun store recently and talking about CZ rifles with someone and another bystander said when they have .22 LR shooting matches at his gun club the CZs are always the winners.

The 452 special is a fine rifle and that is a great price too. You could spend $16 on a Brookes trigger kit for that rifle and then you would have a rifle that will give any rimfire a run for it's money.

BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT. Does that make it eaiser:D

Good choice. The 452 models are all basically the same action with assorted combinations of barrels, stocks and sights.

The price looks good from what I remember. I haven't priced one recently...okay, there's one on gunsamerica for $259+shipping+FFLfee.

The Special has a hardwood stock. To get a 452 with walnut will run $350ish IIRC - I bought my 452 American .22 WMR used for $285 a number of years ago.

Here's the CZ forum at RFC:

I disagree about the pricing John. If you look hard enough you can find better deals than that. Gander mountain (or at least the one by me) sells the American for $309 and the Lux (walnut stocked) for $279. So you can find the walnut stock for a little less than the $350 mark if you look around. Actually, I own a few 452's and have not paid more than $325 for any of them new in box.

I believe the Special comes with a beech stock. I get that unit confused with the Trainer. One has checkering the other doesn't but both have beech wood stocks IIRC.

I paid 189 for my Special a couple of years ago and the price has increased ever since. I don't think 219 is a bad price at all NIB and I would be tempted to get another at that price.

You might save a few bucks if you can order one from Whitaker's in KY but my guess is it would be a wash after you paid shipping and FFL transfer. I really like my CZ 452.

If you want something a little less smooth but pretty accurate you could consider one of the Savage MKII heavy barrel units with the accutrigger.

Rimfirecentral is a good point for info on both.

I think I was in a Gander Mountain once. Maybe it was a Bass Pro. Anyway, prices certainly vary by location.

Whittaker's used to charge $10 to ship a rifle, so if you have an inexpensive FFL to work with you might come out okay. They charged me $12 once, and apologized for having to do it, to ship a $1600 Cooper.

I also bought my Special for $189 back in early 2002. It has exceeded my accuracy expectations many times , really for the price and the accuracy delivered the whole deal seems almost too good to be true!

I love the heck out of my special! I would definitely recommed it. Great iron sights too!

Sorry John, you are absolutely right - prices do vary greatly depending on location. I will second the statement of checking with Whittakers. They have about the best pricing of CZ's a feller can find and their shipping prices are outstanding. As long as you can find an FFL that will treat you right then Whittakers is the place to buy.

The prices vary by shop but at this price they are still well worth it and will compare in quality and accuracy with guns costing 3X as much. I`ve a CZ452 FS in 17 HMR that suprises me when 5 rd groups are larger then 1" at 100 yds. It is one great shooting rifle. well maybe 1.25":D

I have a CZ-452-2E ZKM, which is the rifle you are looking at (I believe), and it is a great shooter. Go for it, those are nice. The only major concern, is that you want to feel the action. Some are very gritty, but others aren't.

I have the very rifle you are talking about.

I consider myself a good shot with a rifle. Not exceptional, just good. Out of the box, with Remington Golden bullet bulk box ammo, firing from a seated position (indian style with sides of elbows braced against sides of knees) I found myself hitting a 3" x 4" metal flag (target flag tree) at 100 yards, about 50% of the time. After adjusting the trigger down to minimum pull, and replacing the rear blade sight with a peep sight, I found myself hitting the flags about 75% of the time. From a benchrest, about 85%. For me, that is phenomenal accuracy, for a total expenditure of about $250.

Good rifle but look at the American first, you may like that better for your usage. I have 6 CZ's in all the rimfire calibers and am very happy with all.
Go for the trigger kit after about a 1,000 rounds. :D

Or, for a tad more cash than the American, you can get the new 453 instead of the trigger kit, and get a single-set straight from the factory.

Regardless, you'll be happy with a CZ. Never heard of anyone who wasn't thrilled with one (or more).

The Brookes trigger kit is only $16 and will make it a nice trigger. The 453 is about an extra $100 more than the 452 but if a guy didn't mind the extra $100 it would be well worth it. I only have 452's in the rimfires but I have the set triggers on my 527 and 550 and love them. Well worth the extra $100 for the 453 if you ask me but a guy would be very happy with either:)

I have the exact same rifle as well and I love mine. It is VERY accurate and has a good trigger. I did get the Brooke's trigger kit and install it as well. I got mine last year and paid $240 out the door with tax so that price sounds about right.

Go for it, you won't regret it!

Thank you for all of your input. I called the shop on my way home from work and they sold it a couple of hours earlier. :banghead: It's a regularly stocked item, but only one at a time. Looks like I'm going to have to wait a week or two for them to get another in.

Thanks,

Mike

I was searching for a link to Whittakers, but no luck. Had it before the 'puter crashed, but now gone.
Can somebody help me out with a link plzzzz.....?

You might be right, but I thought the Trainer and the Special were exactly the same thing. Same question came up on RFC: Special or Trainer?

The Lux. I free floated the barrel and Brookies trigger kit brings the pull down to a very crisp 2lbs.

This gun taught me to love the .22 again.
