CZ 550fs or Tikka T3 lite?

Fella's;

I've got both, & in fact several versions of both. My son's CZ550 fullstock in 6.5 Swede will ring the 1 foot diameter 600 yard gong 'bout any time he wants to point it in that direction. However, my left hand custom Swede is built on a Tikka action, in wood, and is also exceedingly accurate, though with a Lilja barrel. My T3 synthetic in .30-06 is no slouch either. Either would be fine, but if I were you, I'd get the CZ in 6.5 Swede, but then I'm a sucker for that cartridge.

If i get the chance the swede would be in the 550 American or the tikka hunter. And a bipod would live on it along with some good glass and a suppressor. But that project is down the road a ways...

I'd get the CZ. I'd have a hard time learning to love a synthetic stock, and a detatchable mags is not something I want on a hunting rifle.

That is one thing I forgot. I also don't care for rifles with DBM's but that is purely personal.

Its funny the comments on the magazine, the tikka mag is about the only detachable mag on a hunting rifle I DO like... Most stick out too far, or have a weak latch and the mag can fall out. Neither is true of the Tikka.

I just don't care for them. But if there was a rifle I wanted that only could be had with a DBM, it wouldn't stop me from getting it.

So I've been contemplating a new rifle lately, it will be a 30-06, and my needs are for hunting and casual target shooting from feeling there breath range to 600 yards. I have a great open sight Savage 30-06 already that can stay as is or wear a scope for the long stuff. Now the question: a CZ 550 fs?View attachment 230769 Or a Tikka T3 liteView attachment 230770

I am an unashamed fanboy for CZ products, and the cost from the suppliers I've found puts these two rifles in virtually the same category, only about 100 bucks apart. The tikka is butter smooth and I really like the mag compared to a lot of other rifles detachable mags, but the CZ is also smooth as silk and I love the extra capacity of the hinged floorplate mag. And then there's the stock.... Beautiful Turkish walnut vs a really durable and comfortable functional synthetic that actually fits and feels good.
So what should I do?!....

I would not pick Mannlicher stocked rifle for 600 yard shooting. From manufacturers suggested I would contemplate CZ-550 American with plastic stock (if still available) vs. the Tikka. Tikka being lighter would make better hunting rifle. Your money your call.

IMO, neither is true of the CZ 550s that use the detachable magazine, either. The latch is inside the trigger guard and requires a deliberate actuation, a complete press forward to release the mag. I guess the "sticks out too far" is a subjective thing, but it doesn't seem so to me.

In a CRF I prefer a hinged floor plate and in push feed a blind magazine. I imagine that puts me in the minority big time.

I haven't had a chance to play with the 550 with a detachable mag yet, CZs are kinda hard to find around here, but that one looks great! The one on my CZ 527 is right at the balance point of the rifle but sticks out about an inch. Its the only thing I dont like about the rifle.

If you get an original T3 I would suggest switching out the tire rubber "recoil pad" with a limbsaver for a package that is lightweight, but still comfortable to shoot.

That thing was like a hockey puck.

Love my CZ FS's . I have 2 , a 6.5 x55 and a 22 mag, The 6.5 with the right bullet will take anything in North America .and is superbly accurate . The 22 mag, is a 22 mag like any other, but it sure is pretty .

I cut CZ a lot of slack on some of the discontinuations, and give them credit for knowing how to manage their business, continue to appeal to shooters world wide, and keep the company healthy (which is more than can be said about a lot of gun manufacturers these days http://www.mssblog.com/2017/03/03/colt-re-enters-the-rumor-mill-with-layoffs/ ).

If you check out CZ's catalog https://www.czub.cz/produktovy_katalog_en/files/assets/basic-html/page-1.html it's clear that they make a TREMENDOUS number of models. It stands to reason that they can't continue production of everything while steadily bringing out quantities new stuff every year.

CZ is, hands down, my favorite small arms company. Nobody else is remotely close. I'll happily accept the title of fanboy. :)

CZ is still my favorite for handguns and rimfires. I'd probably still purchase the new push feed model that replaced the 550 American except for one thing. Barrel length. The standard barrel length is now 20.5" I'm not going to own a long action cartridge chambered rifle with a 20.5" barrel. .270 with a 20.5" barrel? No thanks. I still think CZ puts out great quality products and my preference won't, and shouldn't affect their marketing strategy. Hopefully enough customers will vote with their pocketbooks and CZ will bring back the 550 American. Until then I'll purchase Model 70s and Vanguard S2s.

Fortunately there is GB and the broader internet for anyone who wants a 550 model that's been discontinued. Might take a little bit of patience but they're pretty easy to find. I know it seems like I regularly have to resist bidding on this or that one that shows up on GB, such as a particular American on there right now with some nice wood hiding under the factory finish. :)
