Hey everyone,

I'm really torn about which pistol I should get. My budget is $700 and the only 2 that I see that fit my criteria are the CZ 75 and the Beretta 92/M9. I just want a metal framed 9mm with a hammer that I can trust with my life.

I saw that someone else started a similar thread a while back, but I would really appreciate everyone's feedback. It's been a few years, maybe things have changed.

Thanks!

Truth is you won't go wrong with either. If you can, shoot both and then decide. On paper and in pictures, they both are great, but the only way for an individual shooter to really know is to actually shoot them.

Both of them are great - but the 75b just feels that little bit better to me.

I think it's a little more streamlined.

I have handled both. The CZ feels a lot better in my hand. Sort of like a glove compared to an oven mitt. But, all hands and mileage will vary.

Handled both and got the CZ 75. It was more comfortable and accurate in my large hands and the wife's smaller ones. Perceived recoil felt less in the CZ for both of us. (Very important for my wife.) Finally, we got the Kadet 22 conversion kit. It's the most accurate 22lr pistol we own even compared to the Ruger Mark II target model.

Good luck with your search.

Jeff

After firing my CZ75, a 92FS feels like the wrong end of a baseball bat in my hands! Definately handle both before making a choice....

For me it s the 92 all the way. I dont know what it is but the pistol is very accurate for me in my hands. I cant explain it but Im far more accurate and quicker with the 92. Not to mention that of the 5 I own, I've never had a malfunction..........ever.

All that being said, I think the 75 is a classic in its own and would love to own some day! Kevin.

If you want to shoot paper at the range save some money and buy the CZ. If you want a gun to trust with your life get the Beretta.

Actually for less money there are guns I like better than the Beretta. But they are dead nuts reliable and accurate enough for combat. They have been field tested and battle proven. The CZ will probably be slightly more accurate, and make a good range gun, but is almost never used by anyone in combat and its reliability is several notches below Beretta.

If you want to trust your life, like the Israeli Mossad, get either. The Israelis used both Beretta as well as the CZ-75, though they preferred the CZ, as do the Swiss and Turks. The Israelis understand combat better than armchair commandos, and given the region, having Turkish and Israeli endorsements goes well beyond "almost nobody." And the Swiss have made more CZ-based pistols than their own SIG 210 design. Their vote, while not registered here, is significant. The CZ is equal to the task of any Beretta...period.

And grabbing the serrations of a CZ is quick and easy - there's plenty of purchase.

Handled and shot both. I bought a CZ.

The slide on a CZ will be tougher to rack, but even my 135-pound, 'medium'-glove-sized self doesn't have any trouble with it.

Also on the hand size, my CZ (I bought the PCR) feels like the designer had me in mind. It fits like an extension of my hand, and my larger-handed friends still compliment it. That same ham-fisted pal bought a 92, the DAO variant, and even he's stated that it feels thicker than it really should, for what it is.

It just comes down to preference, I would bet my life to either after a proper test period for that specific piece, but that 92 feels like holding a 2x4 compared to a CZ.

I purchased the CZ simply because it fit my small hand better. Have never had a malfunction with either my 75B or my PCR.

The CZ is a world class benchmark, a standard by which others are judged. It is popular the world over because it is simple, reliable, and ergonomic. Nothing about the CZ is anything but top notch. For comparrison, the Beretta is medicore at best and only achieved any popularity because politics wrangled it through a messy US contract it didn't even really win and then Mel Gibson shot down a helicopter with one. It is overly complicated, none of the controls are where they should be or operate as they should, and it's fatter than it should be for the firepower it provides.

The Beretta isn't even worthy of sitting in the CZ's shadow. You're talking about one of the best of the breed (CZ) being compared to one of the worst (Beretta).

Between the two for me it would be Beretta but I own neither as I prefer SIGs and Walthers.

Why limit yourself to $700??

You are close to being in the range for a new SIG P226 or HK P30/P30L which would be worth checking out. You can easily get a SIG P226 Certified Pre Owned in your price range.

An extra couple hundred bucks is nothing as far as an investment in a lifetime of shooting unless you just plan to buy, shoot a box or two and put it away.

Good luck in finding what works for you. As always is is best to rent/borrow what you are considering and compare what you are considering and then make your decision.

Another handled both and bought the CZ. And FWIW I'm former military and was trained on the M9. CZ fits your hand better and the barrel axis sits a bit lower. Either way both are reliable.

Both are great.

I voted for the CZ75 only because the 92FS is a bit on the large size, and I'm not a big fan of the slide-mounted safety/decocker.

They are both fine pistols. Here's how to tell which one is right for you:

1) Hold the empty pistol in a one-handed firing grip, trigger finger straight, muzzle pointed at the floor. Identify a point on the wall to aim at, and close your eyes. Then aim the gun at where you remember the point was.

Now open your eyes. If the gun fits you, it will be pretty close to dead on. If the gun does not fit you, it will be canted to one side or another, or too high or low. Try the same exercise again with a two-handed grip.

2) With eyes open, and the gun still pointed at your target spot on the wall, place your finger on the trigger and squeeze your grip tightly. Did the gun move? That's bad. If they gun stayed on target, it fits.

Buy the gun that fits best, shoot it often, maintain it well. It will perform perfectly when you need it.

I voted CZ also. I bought a 75b last summer. This winter I followed that up with a PO-1 and a CZ82. CZ's are great guns. Put one in your hand, and it feels like a body part that you should have been born with. I've never had a problem grabbbing and racking the slide even with oil on my hands from cleaning the gun. That's not an issue at all, and I've got older construction worker hands. So you young guys should not have a problem at all that is unless your a girly man. Then you might have a problem.

I voted CZ also, It feels so much beter in my hand and fit and finish is 2nd to none. There is a reason it is the most used pistol in the world.

I had a CZ 75B in 40S&W and a CZ Compact 9mm. Neither gun worked out for me, but a lot of people really like them and shoot them well and that's great. The Beretta 92 is really good range gun, very accurate, so I'd go with the Beretta.
