I'm going to get a handgun for shooting at the range. I want to get a CZ. Which gun would be better suited for the range P01 or SP01? If I got the smaller P01 (for potential carry), would I regret it at the range? Are there any features between the two beside size? Thank you.

michaelmcgo,

If its just for use at the range you might want to go with the bigger gun. I don't own the SP01, but do own/carry the CZ75 P01. The P01 is very, very accurate for a compact gun. That said I shoot my full-size CZ75B the most, I like the heft and increased sight radius.

I use to shoot the P01 in IDPA alot, but now I mostly carry it when a full size gun isn't practical. Try them both and pick the one that you like the most at the time. Because at some point you will own/buy another. Beware of CZs!:)

P.S. Did I mention I like CZs.

For pure range work, SP-01.

But I do a lot of shooting at the range with my P-01 as well, and it's a pretty good compromise of size and performance. Kind of like the Glock 19 of the CZ line. If you think you might want to CCW with whichever pistol you buy, go with the P-01.

Unless you are planning on competing in IDPA where the SP-01 is not legal, the SP-01 would be the way to go because it is larger and heavier.

The SP01 can be made legal for IDPA, so don't use that as a disqualifier. The SP01 is a very soft shooting, accurate pistol with great ergos. I also like having safeties, not decockers...so that gives the SP01 another leg up on the P01 to me...you can get the SP01 with decocker or manual safety, the P01 is decocker only.

SP01 all the way. The SP01 is the perfect range gun. It's big, it's bad, and it's scary accurate with fixed sights. Add target sights and it will be really awesome. Hardly any recoil at all. I enjoy shooting my SP01 so much, I rarely carry any other handgun to the range.

Thank you all for the replies. I will go to hold them again, I've got to find a shop with them both so I can hold them side by side. The SP01 is looking fairly tasty...

How about making it tastier?
With my Witness Elite Match (.38super) shortly after acquiring the SP01...

Both guns are a joy to shoot and should be amazingly accurate. I carry a either a P01 or SP01 Tactical. The P01 is much lighter and a little smaller, but I like the grooved Hogue grips, magazine capacity and tritium sights on my SP01. If I'm wearing a belt, chances are the SP01 is attached. I can usually get away with slipping the P01 into my front pocket.

I did some impromptu distant target work this morning (my neighbor was zeroing his scope on his rifle and I got bored) with my SP01 and was quite impressed with accuracy at 53 yards! I just posted a Range Review on the pistol with a picture of the target, so you might want to take a peek.

I did have the P01 with me today, but I didn't shoot it. I've put a lot of rounds through the P01 and just got the SP01, so I wanted to get the SP01 a little more trigger time.

I've never shot the P01 out at this distance, but I will say the P01 is certainly as accurate as the SP01 in defensive distances and normal range work... say out to 25-30 feet. I've never shot longer distances with the P01.

Both guns "point" and operate the same way, and feel incredibly similar in the hand. Obviously, the SP01 is much heavier and a little longer in the barrel and in the grip.

I don't think there's a clear-cut answer to your question as to which gun is "better" for range work *and* carry. They are both fantastic, reliable and accurate pistols.

Steve

Edit: Chances are, you'll buy one and then you'll get another... there are a total of 3 here -- My wife and I each have P01's and I got the SP01 Tactical not long ago... it's addictive.

I had a 40P with the rubber grips for a short while. I never warmed up to them, something off about the ergo's. Now my 75BD with the plastic grips on the other hand...mmmm. Talk about comfy.

I don't think you really need to spend all that $$$ on a new SP01 with the fancy rail and doodads when a regular 75 will do just fine for your purposes.

Or how about the mighty 97? Now that thing is scary accurate.

There's more to an SP-01 than just the rail. The ergonomics are different - slightly but noticably. I have an SP-01 Tactical and a 75BD. There's enough difference that given the choice, I would go with the SP-01.

There's a world of difference between the SP-01 (or any 75) and the P01. Personally, the P01 is too small and doesn't fit my hands well at all.

I think the biggest factor has to be how you like the feel of the gun and how you shoot it. If the P01 is a "disappointment" for you at the range, then would you really want it to be your carry gun? If it's good enough for carry, then it should be good enough for the range.

Just my $0.02...
