Is there any quality or performance difference between the CZ 75 SP01, and the Standard CZ 75B?

Also I have been hearing horror stories of too weak extractor springs, ftf HP ammo etc.. on forums all over the net, is this an isolated problem, or do CZ's need work out of the box to get them running properly?
I don't enjoy tinkering with my guns, and I don't need anymore projects, I just want a shooter!

Thanks Gang

There isn't a quality difference. The SP01 isn't fitted any tighter or anything like that. It does have a few features that are different
Different Grip (more like P01)
Rubber grips
Some have night sights
Extended Mag release
Ambi Safety
etc.

It is technically a Cz75B SP01. Functionally they are exactly the same as a regular 75B. They do shoot and handle considerably different though.

Quality is the same.

I'd give the (slight) performance edge to the SP-01, depending on what you are wanting the pistol to do. The SP-01 was a lot of weight forward with that steel tac rail, which makes for very little muzzle flip and makes it very fast back onto target. SP-01 also ships from the factory set up for drop free mags.

As for horror stories, my SP-01 and P-01 have not had any issues with the factory springs. I run mostly ball ammo through them, but have run some JHP through to make sure they'll feed (mostly the P-01 which is my CCW) and have had no problems with them. Both were ready to run out of the box with zero work (same also true of my CZ-97).

Honestly, there seem to be a lot more horror stories out there about CZs than I've personally seen any evidence to support, kind of like how half of all Glocks on the internet kB, all 1911's need extensive gunsmithing to make then run right, etc etc., I guess. Personally, I've been quite happy with my CZs; if I could only keep one pistol it would probably be my P-01.

:) I have a PCR which is not much different than the SP-01. I had four FTF issues early on with the gun (first 100 rounds). Two with some hot ranger ammo I picked up at a gun show. Two with HydraShocks. I now run 124 regular power speer gold dots with no problems at all.

I would trust my PCR with my life. That is why it is my carry gun. Also the most accurate pistol I have. The only modification I made was to add nite sights.

If you get a chance test one out at a range that has rentals. I bet you will be suprised at how well this gun fits in your hand and how well it shoots. But I must warn you....you will probably want one.

I have owned 2 SP-01s; the first one needed a wolff extractor spring and then it ran 100%. The one I own currently has been 100%.

Thanks for all of the replies so far, my intended use is simply plinking. I am not going to be using it for carry, other than around the farm. I am just looking for a sub $600 pistol that will be an excellent shooter.

I currently have five CZ75Bs in various chamberngs and formats. None have given me any FTF/FTE or other issues over tens of thouands of rounds of ammo, using chiefly reloads and Blazer.

I prefer the standard CZ75B over the SP01 due to the increased weight and muzzle-heavy balance of the SP01.

I have owned five CZ's. Three of those had FTE problems until I put in Wolff extractor springs. All now have Wolff springs. I don't call spending three dollars and five minutes to replace an extractor spring a "horror story". I call it getting the reliability of a $800 gun for $400 with just a little maintenance.

Never replaced a single spring in 5 CZ pistols. No problems after thousands of rounds. I do need to order some spring sets as a normal insurance program, of course.

Too bad it doesn't sell for $403.00 and be correct out of the box.

my CZ85 has 3000 rounds through it using stock springs, and I've had no problems what so ever. Plus, in my hands, it is every bit as accurate as any pistol I own all of which cost more, some up to 4 times more. YMMV

My SP01 has about 2000 rounds through it with no issues. Have used WWB, bulk ball stuff, CorBon, Rem, even Buffalo Bore's hot stuff. It's my most accurate 9mm even over my tricked out BHP.

I own a CZ97b. Mine is a 1998 model.

Anyways, I was looking at CZ 9mms and there are so many, I don't know where to start. I mean, why does CZ have so many variations of the CZ75/85? If this is such a great gun, why do they now have the P01 and SP01?

What are the pros and cons of each?

For the same reason that there are different flavors of the 1911, or that there are multiple Glocks (19, 17, etc) that all shoot 9mm.

They aren't really the same gun

75B = regular sized standard 9x19mm (military sidearm) with SA/DA and safety
P01 = somewhat compact decocker police sidearm for daily carry aluminum frame
SP01 = Fullsized heavy steel frame for action pistol games and police use
etc.

Different grip lengths
Different barrel/slide lengths
Aluminum and Steel frames (some poly too I think)
Decocker non Decocker
Adjustable sights Fixed Sights
etc. etc.
