Anyone have any experience with one of these, good or bad?
I am in the market for a new Bolt gun in .308, and really liked the looks and feel of this rifle. It is between the CZ550 and a Savage 10FP with a Choate stock.
I already know how well the the Savage rifles are, I just got rid of a 110 in .25/06

Thanks in advance for the input.

EBR,

The CZ is a good rifle. Be aware, though, that the .308 CZ 550 is in a .30-06 length action. CZ puts a spacer in the magazine to accomodate the shorter .308 cartridges. If you're wanting a .308 in a short-action, you're not getting it in the CZ. If I'm getting a long action, I want the .30-06, instead of the .308.

Unless CZ has wised up, they were putting plastic followers in the mags. I put a steel follower in mine.

Don't know much about the Savage, though.

Does that mean that their 550 in .243 is a long action also? The 527 I bought this summer came with a metal magazine follower, that stinks about the plastic follower on your 308.

EBR, what are you planning to do with it? IMHO, I'd take the CZ for hunting, the Savage for target shooting, but either way you have two great choices.

I am going to use it mostly for paper punching, but also for the occasional Deer hunt.
So, the 550 is a long action? I would prefer a short action.
I suppose the Savage is looking like the winner here...

Thanks for the input so far.
This board rocks.

My CZ 550 Varmit Lamined has a steel follower and a correct length magazine, no spacer. It also happens to be for sale ;)

Not quite as accurate as my .308 Browning A-Bolt Eclipse w/ BOSS I recently aquired, which is good since the A-Bolt is worth about twice as much. But it is frightingly close for 1/2 the price.

I may be wrong about the location of the spacer - I haven't looked at mine in a while. It may be in the back of the action, I'm not sure. Call CZ-USA and ask for "CJ". Ask him on what action length the .308s are based. He can probably tell you how they space the long bolt throw for the shorter cartridge length.
