This is the latest addition to our family. It is a Dan Wesson "Aussie." Note the rib along the top of the slide. This is one of the distinctions of an Aussie.

This is a Custom Aussie, with some nice internals and some time in the DWF Custom Shop.

I worked directly with Bob Serva, President at DWF on this deal, and found it originally through their Direct Sales on GunBroker Auctions. He appears to be very involved in the company.

Here was the post from the original GB listing:

DAN WESSON FIREARMS MODEL: PMA-S Custom
CALIBER: 45 ACP
TRIGGER: STI Match Grade
TRIGGER PULL: 3.5 LBS
SIGHTS: Bomar style adjustable match
BARREL: Forged 416 Match stainless steel
GRIPS: AAA Cocobolo Exotic hardwood

New Stainless Steel 45 ACP full size 1911, Stainless forged slide With Front & rear serrations and stainless steel frame. Stainless Steel small parts.

  • Match grade hammer and sear
  • Ed Brown Memory groove beavertail safety
  • STI thumb safe
  • Ed Brown slide stop
  • Bomar Style fully adjustable sights
  • Wilson Speed chute
  • Novak magazine.
This gun is loaded with high performance features and has the very nice Clark-style target rib milled down the top of the slide. Match ready out of the box with lots of TLC from our custom shop.

I took it out for a spin this afternoon, and shot a few rounds of S&B 230 hardball to get a good feel for this pistol. Unfortunately, I am smack dab in the middle of trying to change my stance from a modified Weaver to Isosceles because of some recommendations by some really good plate shooters. Before I stray too far from the range report, I must say that Isosceles seems to really put the gun back to target far faster than otherwise. YMMV. (It sure is hard to change old habits.)

Anyway, I was going back and forth from my tried and true stance to the new one, while trying to build some groups. I am certain that with in 6 weeks or so, I can get these groups down by 30-50% with this pistol. Several times today, the following shot would go right through the prior hole. That is fun!

Only one failure to lock back in 350+ rounds (on aChip McC Magazine, not the supplied Novak's), and otherwise flawless operation out of the box. Slide to Frame fit is super, and seems to ride like its fitted with ball bearings! ;)

Cool. Looks like a nice looker and a nice shooter.

I love a good range report.

That's a great looking gun (darn nice photos too)! How do you like that STI trigger? I really don't know why these guns don't sell like crazy. I love my Patriot and feel I got it for a steal of a price. I really want one of ther bobtail commanders. If it's half the gun my Patriot is I'll be happy. 800 failure-free rounds so fa!

Nice gun, and very good photos!

I am also working on switching my stance and grip a bit from weaver to isocoles. It's a bit wierd, but it does seem to be working a bit better for me. little faster and better natural point of aim, especially on follow up shots.

Update: I shot plates last night and did the best I ever have.

While I am not in the “expert†category (yet), I was able to point and shoot with confidence and accuracy. What a hoot! I shoot a SIG P225 in 9mm very well, and did far better with the “Aussie.â€

I made it to the final tiers and was only beat buy guys far, far better than I (to be expected.) I was very pleased to say the least.

I am certain that isocoles is faster on follow-ups - no question. The hard part for me is front sight acquisition, in so much as it is a further distance from my face, than where I am used to.

Now, there can many reasons and variables that I can attribute my success to last night, but I choose to acknowledge that fine shooter of a pistol.
