Dan Wesson questions...

I have always wanted a Dan Wesson with the entire barrel set in .357. Well, recently I ran across one in LN condition with all the barrels, a combat style grip with DW logo, a finger-groove grip(looked like it was hand carved by a 4 year old), and brown breifcase(don't know if it was the original case or not?).

I almost bought it, but the more I held it, the less I liked it. The combat style grip wasn't even symmetrical and it wasn't very comfortable to hold. Is this typical of old DW revolvers? Did they originally come in the ugly brown briefcases with aluminum frame? There was another .357 in the same shop that only had 3 of the barrels...it was also in the same style brown case and came with 2 grips(looked like the same 4 year old carved this one before he had any experience).

Any Dan Wesson experts here that can explain this?

Pistol packs came with as many barrels as the customer ordered if I'm correct. The rips on my supermag are the target grips and are real nice, it's possible someone tried to modify them. As far as the case if it has a baby poop yellow pillow like inside then yes it is original. Quality is on par with colt and older smith and wesson revolvers and hogue makes an excellent wood grip for the DW with or without finger grooves. Dan wesson still makes barrels and shrouds for all the older magnums and the price is good, if it was me I would buy in a heartbeat as I've been in the market for a pistol pack since I bought my supermag. Its like having 4 pistols in 1 and the accuracy is great.

I liked the quality of the metal and the bluing, I was just surprised at the grip being crooked. It also felt like a huge grip since the pistol frame seemed small...but then, I have kinda gotten accustomed to the framesize on the S&W .41Mag. I guess the DW would compare to a K-frame S&W? What's a good price on one of the pistol packs with 8", 6", 4", 2", 1"??? I wanted to do a price check before buying it...and since I felt the need to buy "something" while there, I wound up with a Beretta Cx4.

You might not see exactly what you're looking for, but you can get an approximation. Complete pistol packs I've seen in 22 were going for about $700. Ditto for 357. But I've also seen them advertised for $1000. It's whatever the market will bear.

I'm not too familiar with DW, but I owned a 744 (44 mag stainless) with two barrels and was not at all impressed with it. The angle of the hammer spur was so shallow that it was difficult to get a good thumb grip on. Plus, the hammer was cast steel and the grooves which constituted the gripping surface were so shallow it made for a dangerous situation when cocking.

But the angle on the 357s and 22s is much steeper/more pronounced. I wouldn't see it as a problem.

The only thing I've read, however, is that the Monson guns (city where it was made?) are good. Anything else is bad?

You can buy or make just about any reasonably shaped grip for the Dan Wesson revolvers. That's one of their many advantages. When I had a DW, I had Pachmayrs on mine. I wish I still had it.

The main problem with Dan Wesson revolvers is the pointablity of their barrels. They may not point straight because of how the frame and barrel shroud are cut. The timing may be off too. Not all grips are comfortable, but there are many such to buy on ebay. I have had to tinker with both of mine. One I gave up on and sold cheap and I'm not totally thrilled with the remaining. Buy the model 14 if you have to. A Ruger is a better choice.
