I've seen the Remington tables with the serial number blocks, but maybe I'm just that stupid that they don't make sense to me. My gun has two sets of markings, and I'm reading that the serial number alone isn't that accurate. So first, it has an "infinity" symbol, like an 8 on it's side, followed by XX, then a 63. The serial number, is 616xxxx.
So if I go by the Serial number Blocks, it doesn't exist. They tell me 1967 ends at 068460. They say that 1968 begins at 6200000.
If I go by the XX, then the rifle was made in Dec. of 1963. Only problem is, this is a Remington 788, and wasn't made until 1967. Can anyone verify that I'm missing something, and just an idiot? Or is there some other code I haven't deciphered yet?
Thanks in advance

I tried to date a 788 but she wouldn’t go out with me.

I found that they don’t have much personality. You beat me to it... I came here to be a donkey.

Remington uses a letter code... I think it’s BLACKPOWDER or some such word where each letter denominated a year. Google search it, there are some really good explanations on figuring out stuff like that on YouTube where they talk you through where, what, and how to look for stuff, then explain what it means when you find it.

I have two M788s and love them, but my - or your - love doesn’t sell rifles. They tried to reduce the cost with the Mohawk version, but if they don’t sell you simply stop making them. Simple as that, even for a corporate exec.

herrwalther, I had seen similar tables already, and according to the ones I saw, it gave me that 1963 Date for the X X that was on my rifle. Using the link you sent above, it looks like when you scroll all the way down, there's another X for 1973, which would make much more sense. I had seen the "BLACKPOWDER" thing before. So it looks to me like it was made in Dec. of '73, when I was a Freshman at high school! I don't know why the tables I saw before didn't have that the same way. They were from the Remington site, as well. Thanks Just as a P.S. I took this gun to the range the other day, and at 100yds which is max at my club, I could cover my group with a quarter! Mine is a 6mm, and I was shooting Rem. 100gr. soft points.

I didn't know anything about lock time when I bought my first one in 1972, I just knew that once I had the 6mm Remington cartridge sighted in I could hit what I was aiming at out to about 400 yards.

Well, this gun I purchased from a guy at work. I think he either had it in his attic, or his basement. Some rusting on the barrel that looked a lot worse than it was. I got it home, and it does have a slight bit of pitting on the outside of the barrel, but it cleaned up nice enough, and I've already spoken about the groups it shoots. The price tag was $75, so how could I pass it up?
