I'm trying to get more information on a gun for my uncle. All that we know is that it's a Davenport double-barrel, 12 gauge, 3 inch chamber.

The writing is small but we could read "WH Davenport Firearm Company Norwich Conn. USA.

The serial number is 4 digits.

We know that the gun is pretty old, but we'd like to get a possible year of manufacture.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

They were in business with that address from 1890 to 1900.
Other sources say they were in business up until WWI, or about 1915.

I know of no serial number references for them.

It probably does not have 3" chambers, but if it does, it was intended only for black-power shells.

Modern smokeless 3" shells did not become available until the 1920's & 30's.
And modern 3" Magnum shells did not become available until the 1950's.

At any rate, I would go so far as to say it is not safe to shoot with modern 3" shells, regardless of whether it is in fact a 3" or not.

I added a picture to my original post, hopefully it will help to get more informaton on this gun and the company. Maybe it's hard to find info. because the company has long been out of business?

The stock on the gun is not the original.
