Drill a little, back off and drill more. Rinse and repeat. We used a mild steel shaft soldered onto a drill bit for our long drills for ramrod channels.

Thanks to everyone. Going to start the holes from each end with a regular length brad point drill, then chase it thru with a longer brad point drill, a little at a time, backing off to clear the wood chips.
