Swalwell is out there stumping for confiscation. Before y'all dismiss him out of hand I would not be surprised for this to be endorsed by all of the Dem candidates.

“A ban would leave 15 million (assault weapons) in our community, so I don’t think that really protects us,” Swalwell, who dropped out of the presidential race last month, said before a town hall on gun violence Wednesday at Hayward City Hall. “The buyback is the hard part hard politically, but I think that’s what it’s ultimately going to take… I’m going to continue to insist that those running for president sign onto that.”

A buyback program would declare possession of certain assault weapons illegal, and require owners to sell them to the federal government for fair market value. Those who refuse would be criminally prosecuted.

It’s nearly impossible to imagine a mandatory buyback policy passing a Republican-held Senate or getting support from President Trump, who on Wednesday ruled out an assault weapons ban, although less far-reaching options like a red flag law have found some backing among GOP elected officials in recent days.

Democrats push mandatory federal buyback of 'assault weapons'; prosecution for owners who don't comply:

Taking his numbers as correct for a count of the "assault weapons" extant in our country, and guessing $500 is a "fair market value", which is kind of a crazy concept of the value of something you can't sell, that's about seven and a half trillion dollars cost to buy back, never mind administering the whole nightmare.

Yes! KEEP TALKING! Some ppl just don't get it! What is after the eavil AR15 then. Pistol? Revolver? 2X barrel shotgun?

Come on, tell us what you REALLY want (oh excuse me, it's in my signature line below )

Thats a giant heap of money which can guarantee *IF* it was offered would of course be paid for by fees and taxes on the remaining "good gun" owners. Of course who would say $500 is a reasonable number and which guns are we really talking about? The 15 million or so ARs someone thinks are in circulation, or can I tape a pistol grip and flashlight on my pea-shooter to get paid too?

Swalwell is a voice in the wilderness. No other Democratic candidate has endorsed confiscation, at least not openly. Right now they are pandering to their base, but they know that come November 2020, if they are the nominee, they will have to get the votes of gun owners in swing states such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Florida. The smart ones are hedging their bets, such as Kamala Harris saying she would ban imports of "assault weapons." Of course hardly any such weapons are imported.

Despite the fact that gun control has cost the Democrats dearly in the past, they are doubling down on it this time around. I don't get it, do they know something I don't know?

If they all come out in support of this it won't be good for them IMO, and I doubt they all do.

On one hand, an all-at-once event would be decisive, and skip the slow nibbling away. Lots of us know why we have them; chances that a prompt action succeeds is ~ zero.

An excellent analysis can be found here, by ESR.

I guess a lot of these politicians don't realize that semi-automatic guns have been in existence in this country since the 1890's. They have no idea as to how many are out there.

This occurs when people live and interact with others that only think like themselves. It happens to both Democrats and Republicans. I call it living in alternate universe.

While I don't believe outright confiscation will happen anytime soon, I do believe a significant ban is coming. The winds are shifting, more and more gun owners are starting to feel that maybe there should be restrictions on what people are allowed to own. "Common sense" gun bans will get more support from the majority of American's who really only care about their deer rifle or shotgun they use a few times a year for hunting.

If we can prevent or mitigate any damages until the next election and we do not vote for someone that has stated they are in favor of a ban,

there will not be a ban.

If someone that is in favor of a ban wins the next election then there will be a ban.
