I shot a series of test loads of 3006 with my cast 150 grain bullets and 2400 going from 18 to 28 grains in 1 grain increments. 25 grains was really good as a 100 yards target load. 24 was iffy and 26 started falling apart. I would like to see if I can do better. How big should my increments be around 25 grains? .2 grains? Bigger? Smaller?

I move a min of 1%. In your case that would 0.25gr, so 0.3gr would work nicely.

I should add once I find the load, I move at 0.1gr increments on each side to find out how big the node is. Then load for the center.

I'd move to Alliant Powders either Herco or Green Dot for 150 cast loads for the 30-06. For herco 13.5 for green dot 12.0. Time tested accuracy loading's that are on the less volatile scale.

I am unwilling to buy more powders for something that is basically a 100 yard target load for me. As such, 2400 is what I have and I found a load that just about does it so that is what I will use. I don't know when the next shortage will occur, but when it does I do not want to be hosed because I ran out of the single pound of the magic powder and can't resupply. I think the 25 grain load made an inch and a half 100 yard group on a somewhat windy day and with me blowing one of the shots in the group. More than minute of deer if I ever chose to use it for that, and more than adequate for target practice with what is really my elk rifle.

I have never used it in a rifle case, but it does real well in .357 as far as powder position. Granted, there is not a lot of empty space with this load.

Since 2400 is the powder, perhaps (#311291) lyman 173 grain at approximately 20.0 grains would be an accuracy consideration. If the powder is going to remain the same, perhaps the projectile should change to increase the accuracy potential.

25 gr of 2400 is kind of a lot. Maybe about like a .32-40.
I got best accuracy from 16 gr of 2400 but 12 gr of 700X (I didn't have any Red Dot for The Load) was nearly as good. 7 gr of 700X and a 165 gr cast was pretty good and SUCH a powderpuff.

Eh, already got a powderpuff in 3006 via 12 grains of unique under a 118 grain bullet. That sucker makes bitty groups at 50 yards and should be fun for shock and awe on rabbits and jacks at 75 yards. I stepped up from 18 to 28 grains of 2400 and 25 was by far the best. Hundred yards deer load in a pinch, but I really just wanted a 100 yard target load. I didn't find the recoil bothersome.

I will soon be testing 198 grain bullets over as much as 40 grains of varget. Those might wake me up...
