I just picked up a Dillon Square Deal at an estate sale for $30. Other than missing the cartridge catcher, primer catcher and lid for the powder scale.... all parts seem present. It is set up for 9mm.

Any tips, opinions or comments regarding this unit. Also, if I send it in to Dillon for refurbish, will it be (a) done right; and (b) expensive.
 
Yes, simply call them.

Mine is set up with the .45 ACP dies, but I also have one replete with the dies already adjusted and screwed into their replacment system for 10mm.

Mine has run like a top since about 1986. I still receive replacement bits in the mail. One time I received an entire powder measure assembly when they switched over to a dry-lubricant powder bar.
 
Great little press...you'll find it turns out a lot of beautiful rounds in a hurry. I also was lucky enough to pick one up in an estate sale.

Call Dillon for a RA number and you can send it in to be completely refurbished (including, any missing parts) for the price of return S&H...in my case at the time, $29.95. Mine was returned "like-new" including, an new (upgraded) powder system.
 
Great Find! A refurbish is a good idea, it will come back in near-new condition. I need to get out more, like my friend who bought an 1865 smooth-bore muzzleloader for $150... must be my wild ways.. bad karma.
 
I've had my RL550B for 18 years. With 50,000 rounds thru it it still looks new and loads like new. It is an amazing press. Dillon has always been a pleasure to deal with...always willing to go above and beyond to make the customer happy. You will be happy with what you get back.
 
Dillon charges for a refurbish. You send it to them and they will get your new press functioning for a minimal fee and ship it back to you.

Nope, warranty is good for the life of the press irregardless of the owner. Dillons no BS warranty is the best I've ever seen. Wish others would follow. They won't ask if he's the original buyer. The warranty tags the press, not the owner(s).

I had stripped the bolts from my SD's powder assembly. They replaced it for free, never asked for a reciept or 'proof of ownership'. Then the bar didn't fit, got a free bar assembly. No one even comes close to Dillon for warranty and customer support. They'll replace anything with a smile. Oh, and they make excellent presses too, I have two of them. No, I don't work for or own stock in Dillon Precission.

Nope. Dillon will not even ask about the age or history of the unit unless of course, it's relevant to the nature of the repair. When I first got mine I downloaded a manual to try to figure out precisely what all was missing or if it had other problems. Once I got a grip on some of it I called Dillon for advice on how to proceed getting it up and running. The CSR voluntarily suggested I could return it for a rebuild for $29.95 S&H return fee and gave me a RA number on the phone. I told him up front I got the thing in an estate sale and he said, "no matter, lifetime warranty is lifetime warranty". Two weeks later it was back looking like the day it was made. They even scrapped the perfectly functional older powder system and added the new version.

I have several different brands of presses and like them all for various things. I can't say if Dillon makes the best products but they sure seem to me to be the standard against which the others are compared and I cannot imagine anyone going to the lengths they do in the customer service department. They are an extraordinary company...too bad the auto makers don't follow their business model.
 
I bought a 450 that had been out of production for at least 15 years. Had trouble with the powder measure. They sent me a new updated measure and all the bushings N/C. Told them I bought it used. Didn't matter.
 
I agree with everything said above - except they did not swap out the older powder system on the one I sent in last year. No matter - the old one works just fine.
 
OK thanks for the info. I do feel a little guilty about getting the whole Dillon setup for $30. Actually the guilt lasted about 2 seconds, then came elation.

I have emailed Dillon and will let you know what the response is. I will get it completely refurbed and some new accessories.

I calculated all of the reloading items I got at the estate sale. Well over $1100 of brass/bullets/dies/accessories/ for a total expenditure of $127.00. Makes me grin just to think about it. What made it better was the gentleman in question reloaded pretty much the same calibers that I do.

I might suggest you call Dillon. You might think it's a bit odd in today's environment but Dillon still operates a bit "old school". They are in the process of getting up-to-speed as far as on-line services go but their reps will tell you, still best to call. They're just more geared up to handle things by phone rather than, email.

Lead Ladle
About 6 or 8 (older) load data manuals
Assorted small odds & ends

I told the lady the stuff was worth more and to put it in her public sale and if it didn't go, call me and I'd give her $100.00 for the Dillon. She said, "I just want it gone, if you take it now you can have it all for $50.00". I took it all.

Yeah, I know. The lady could have really been taken advantage of (and probably was) by anyone who wanted to. She had a whole shop|garage of tools some, new and unused as well as, a number of nice rifles, handguns and other stuff she, "just wanted gone". I saw her a few months later trying to sell off some of the guns at a local gun shop. She had the reloading stuff boxed up and I really didn't know what all was there until I got home. All I knew for sure was that the little Dillon was in 1 of them and that's all I really cared about as I had most of the other stuff anyway. She tried to get me to take a (rather expensive) rotary tumbler but I convinced her to keep it for her hobbies. I actually did feel bad for her, very nice lady whose deceased husband I had met before and was an extraordinarly bright guy.

Sentiments aside, no telling how much the deal really cost me. I found out real quick the SD devours powder, primers & bullets at an alarming rate causing me to shoot 3 or 4 times as much. That's my real punishment......:D
