How could I discreetly transport long guns to and from vehicles, for trips to the range and such? I would like to carry them 'hidden in plain sight' so as not to draw the attention of criminals or anti-gun zealots.

I've considered a golf bag with a rain hood (not believable in winter), guitar case (likely to only hold 1 long gun), hockey bag (too short?), or a baseball bat bag.

Also, would one need a concealed-carry license to carry long guns somewhat "concealed"?

Thank You,

Possibly in an old blanket or painter's tarp wrapped around them, maybe even with some straps at each end to keep them secured?

We mostly use "discreet" rifle cases. They're rectangular and look similar to this:

The bass? Are you referring to a bass guitar case? I looked at one at a music shop, and it looked just like a 2-gun rifle case! I came to an additional conclusion that a "musical instrument" may well be seen by criminals as an item that would bring cash at a pawn shop.

Wrapped in blankets or "traditional" soft cases, I put several inside a large duffel bag. The large Bauer bags meant for hockey equipment are long enough for SKS, AR-15, and pretty much anything else I own.

That said, sometimes you just need to break down the rifle, stick it in a large backpack, and do it that way.

Do it Desperado style.

I usually just do it in a normal rifle case. My friend has a hard case good for 2 rifles that is just a rectangular Winchester case with only 1 small Winchester logo on it. he also has a few soft cases that are obviously gun cases. I have a Bushmaster Evil Black Rifle case that is good for 1 rifle or 2 smaller rifles (carries a Stevens .22LR and a Mini-14 nicely) but it is also a pretty obvious gun case.

Not in Texas.

Here you can carry your long gun under your coat / in your golf bag / backpack / etc anywhere firearms are permitted. If you're up to no good, they can't charge you with a "concealed weapon" violation, because in Texas a hidden long gun can't be legally considered "concealed".

Baseball!

I've heard of folks using a baseball bat bag, along w/ a coupla gloves and other baseball/softball stuff (or even a cheap/used golf club bag). Something that even an inquisitive neighbor might overlook.

Let us know what you decide on.

Zipper Duffle bags, Top fill Duffle bags.. look around for a used one. or, purchase one new. there set at a resonable priced GI surplus..

When the firearms are not being transported, it can be used for other uses as well.. I use a backpack to carry my AR15. break it down and toss it in.

for more then one, for range transport, the duffle bag is my choice.

I use the rectangular soft cases mentioned above. They're very compact and when placed under a disheveled blanket blend right in. A guitar or musical instrument case may deter anti's but it'll attract just as many thieves. Also, it makes you look a little weird when you pull an AR out of a guitar case.

Quite frankly, if someone sees you going to and from a range with any sort of long case, they're going to assume it is a gun. I don't know of many people who go to the range to play guitar.

IMO, a bag or case large enough for a gun will attract thieves. Doesn't matter if it's for sports gear or musical instruments. I'd be more concerned about hiding them from your nosy, anti neighbors.

Guitar cases come in tons of shapes, sizes, and colors. I think a tweed guitar case would be appropriate for a Garand.

Don't bother calling the ATF, no one answers the phone, and if they do they put you on hold for an hour, they must be very busy, or need to hire more people

A cello case may be able to hold more than 1, as oppsed to the standard guitar (or bass guitar) case...just a tought, as it SEEMS like they would be pretty big and roomy. Then when people see it and ask what your doing, you can say "I' going out to make some sweet music" (the music of gun lovin' freedom) :D

Get your self a rectangle two gun case, and place some guitar stickers on it. Plenty of electric guitars come in rectangular cases. I always had a "support the arts, kiss a musician" on mine in NY. I had the same problem there. If you get a 4 gun case, get some keyboard stickers.

good luck

I occasionally skulk through my parking lot to and from my car with a rifle stuck in a curtain rod box.

It has a great big (Brand Name) "Curtain Rod" factory label on it, complete with dimensions --and a picture of a curtain rod.

No handles, so you kind of have to carry it with two hands, but it sure is great "hidden in plain view" camouflage.

It started to get a little worn out, so I reinforced it a little.

I mean, after all, how much can you get in a hock shop for curtain rods? :)
