Man commits suicide at Ground Zero

Distraught over the re-election of President George W. Bush, a Georgia man traveled to New York City, went to Ground Zero and killed himself with a shotgun blast, police said yesterday.

The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, 25, was discovered just before 8 a.m. yesterday when a worker for the Millennium Hotel looking at Ground Zero from an upper floor saw a man lying atop the concrete structure through which the 1 and 9 subway lines run.

The worker, thinking the man was sleeping, alerted colleagues and the Port Authority police were notified.

But when they got to Veal's body, they realized he had killed himself with a shot to the head from a .12-gauge shotgun.

No suicide note was found, but according to a Port Authority police source, family members said Veal, a registered Democrat, was despondent over Bush's defeat of Sen. John Kerry. A second source said Veal, who lived in Athens, Ga., and worked for the University of Georgia, was also adamantly opposed to the war in Iraq.

More than three years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Ground Zero remains a top tourist attraction, the site rife with symbolism.

Visitors there yesterday reacted in different ways to news of Veal's suicide. Bobbie Jensen, 54, a Republican from Phoenix, said that while she understood how Bush's victory disturbed those who dislike him, Ground Zero is not the place to act on those emotions.

"You can be upset about the war, about Bush, but this is a sacred place," she said. "You got to accept what happened and not kill yourself." But Frank Franca, an East Village artist and registered Democrat, suggested the suicide was symbolic.

"I'm very moved by it," he said. "Obviously, this person was devastated. I can see why he would come here."

Franca's friend, Jeffim Kuznetsov, a 25-year-old student from Russia who lives in Atlanta, said the suicide is evidence of how deeply many Americans were affected by Kerry's defeat.

"It's a national tragedy," he said. "This election is devastating to all who believe in democracy."

Another visitor to Ground Zero, Arushi Raval, 34, a businesswoman who lives in Chelsea, said Veal might have been active in campaigning for Kerry, only to taste defeat.

"Maybe he felt ineffective," she said of the victim. "You feel ineffective if you tried and it all failed.

"I know so many New Yorkers who are depressed over this."

"I'm very moved by it," he said. "Obviously, this person was devastated. I can see why he would come here."

boo hoo!

i feel sorry for this young mans family, but this was a stupid move, some body needed to reach out to this kid and let him know its just an election ,granted an important one,an old man once told me about elections "you got to trust the majiorty in this country and the will of the people"or who,s smarter the majiorty or the minority, what i hated was the left went around the country whipping up the passions of our young people, not giving them all the facts with their "fight the power"!slogans their rock stars and other cleb,s spouting thier left wing anti-america propaganda, and kids being kids are easily mislead because of thier rebelious ,anti-authority im smarter than you {even tho i havent lived as long}attiudes and most of this is being promoted in our collages, yea the left is not taking this defeat well,to damn bad,i shudder to think what this country would be like in 4 years if kerry had won and the left had it,s way

Kind of funny how we must feel so sorry for the devastated Skerry supporters. My opinion is move to Canada, France or maybe North Korea. If they want to commit suicide, well it proves Darwin’s theory.

Think of this though, if Skerry had stolen the election, where could us Freedom loving Americans move too? Truthfully no where, and as Skerry tried to reshape our great country into his idea of a Communist/Socialist country what would we have to do?

The election, properly done in the greatest nation on the face of the earth, the birthplace of the recognition of individual freedom, supposedly "devastated the nation"?

Pardon me while I projectile vomit. :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

Darwin Award candidate, plain and simple

"It's a national tragedy," he said. "This election is devastating to all who believe in democracy."

What a BS statement, if they believed in Democracy, they would accept the outcome of this election with good graces and move on. Instead they are acting like Demo-facists.

Some advice for the loonie left, in 2008 get a platform, pick a moderate candidate the majority of the country will support, and stop making representing the nutty fringe of society your primary consideration. A collection of fringe groups does not make a majority.

If you give the above a try, you will get back into mainstream politics in America, if not you will remain the minority party representing the two coasts against the middle. And the heartland is dominate ( Thank God ).

Suicide

Just goes to prove that radical Islamics don't have the market cornered on fanatical acts. I feel very bad for his family, but his grandiose style of flipping us all off should elicit no feelings of pity from anyone except from those who knew him. Good that he didn't decide to take a few people with him in an bigger
grandstand display.

GOOD

If he cant put one foot in frount of the other and go on with the next day and take life as it comes then he does not even deserve to enjoy gods greatest gift.

Hes just another Left wing window licking TOOL.

And for thouse of use still enjoying gods greatest gift, I know of many a day where i just sucked it up and put the other foot infrount of the other and said to myself " THIS WILL MAKE ME A BETTER MAN"

Just my .02 cents, because i greatly enjoy my gift of life

"It's a national tragedy," he said. "This election is devastating to all who believe in democracy."
Hmmm...Democrats that are devastated by the results of the democratic process...

Lets hope this guy starts a trend.

What Big Poppa said.

I know a lot of angry people who say they feel "betrayed". Loss sucks, but so many people were so convinced that Bush would be an easy defeat, the "anybody but Bush" way of thinking did a lot to lose the election for the Dems.

People who kill themselves are usually deluded by pain. Depression isn't cut and dry, and I'm not prone to calling people who off themselves "selfish". But driving to Ground Zero to blow your brains out so people can assume you did it to protest the democratic process?

You get my point.

Move to Canada or stay and do something positive for your party. But don't make a show of giving up where people died having no choice.

I don't believe for a minute this guy off'd himself because Kerry lost. If he did that would be, for me, a sign of deeper, underlying problems. I understand he was going to be married. Cherchez la femme and get her take on all this; it will probably reveal that politics was a minor factor.
